Cockpit Storage

Post by mandbstanley » Mon Feb 18, 2002 9:24 pm

Beneath the original radio/cassette player in my 91 car, there is a plastic
panel that blanks off an area that looks like it should have a small cubby
for holding odds and sods. Most other cars have such an area for holding
coins, tickets, pens, even a cell phone if you don't mind risking it being
stolen. Does anyone know if there is anything available that would fit
nicely into the area beneath the radio if I was to remove the blanking
piece?

Murray, due to demand Im currently having a mould made of the factory tray
that will fit straight in.The factory bought out one but it doesnt seem to
be very common as most cars have the blanking plate.Ross.

I use to have such a 'pocket in my '91 back in the States and purchased it
from one of the 'after market' suppliers in the Miata magazine. Back there
a number of stereo installers would also stock an assortment of these
pockets for different manufacturers/model cars. I recall there were
different sized 'pockets' for different radio, radio/cassette, etc combos.
It would be nice if Ross could have one manufactured locally here
---------- it would save me a trip to LA when I decide to replace the
original music box :)

Due to malicious damage by a previous owner, I replaced my original '92 console
surround with a new one purchased from John Newell Mazda in Sydney (when on a
visit to Aus). The surround unit was special (for a '92) as it was made with
an ISO standard radio size cut out (easy to fit aftermarket head units), and
allowed an ISO sized plastic pocket to be fitted under the radio with no gap -
the surround was $A60 and the pocket $A8 (you would need both). Apparently the
pocket it is a similar (I was told identical) size to standard Holden commodore
fitment.

Chris is the sales department person I get stuff from at John Newells. He has
advised me that as an ex-Aucklander, he is happy to send stuff across the
Tasman - John Newell Mazda has a web site with contact facility if interested.

Ross,
When do you think you will have something available off your mould?
