Today I had my exhaust modified in order to put my spare wheel under the
boot - I need all the space I can get, because next week I'm heading off to
the South Island for a month of travelling & camping. Does anyone want to
offer any particular suggestions on nice places to visit?
I see that there's a club event planned for 23rd February - "Fish & Chips at
Jackson's Bay" - there's a "Jackson Bay" near Haast - is that the right one?
I could well be somewhere in that vicinity at the time...

would'nt be surprised if you decide to stay in the south when you do
some open top cruising down here. Don't miss the drives around the hydro
lakes. For mine some of the best driving in the country.

where to go in the South Island?
We have travelled the South Island extensively in our MX5 and to be honest
it is all fantastic, but you must go either up or down the West Coast at
some point. Also, inland from Chch to Queenstown is spectacular as you get
to go past Mount Cook and it makes a good round trip if you've just done the
West Coast.
But the ultimate is of course the route from Te Anau (sp?) to Milford Sound.
It can be wet at times, but if you get the right day, the forest lined road
to the Sound is the best route in the South Island. The Homer tunnel is a
blast when the top is down. Plus if you have the cash you can now go for a
ride in the underwater submarine vessels that they have in Milford. About
$400+ but you get to go in a glass-fronted submarine and view the fiords
from underwater...
Make sure you go through "the Gates of Hell" just after Haast (if your
travelling South or just before if your heading north). Make sure you get
out and stop and check out these mighty rocks and waterfalls. The trip
between Wanaka and Haast is also very beautiful. There are about three
massive lakes (Hawea, Wanaka etc) and a million waterfalls coming down from
the mountains.
Check out the Punakaiki rocks when up the top end of the West Coast. It's
free and spectacular.
Basically, go everywhere but only go via East Coast if you've already been
everywhere else as it is a bit boring...
PS The Caitlins down near Dunedin and fun too.

If you've got the time and the inclination, do a full day guided walk of
the Franz Josef or Fox Glaciers - the guiding companies provide the gear
you need ( boots, raincoat, etc ). A full day trip is about $90 & its an
awesome experience...

Karl I am organising the "Fish'n'Chip" run to Jackson Bay - yes it is near
Haast. You would be most welcome to join in if the timing works out for
you. I can send trip details if you reply to me personally
(robin.thomas@xtra.co.nz) rather than load up everyones mailbox
unnecessarily. The brief details are that we are leaving from Dunedin
Railway Station at 9.30 Saturday morning 23 Feb - joining up with at least
one vehicle from Central Otago, and possibly some from Christchurch and
Invercargill en route. Motel accomodation available at Haast ($81 - 87 per
double) and the best fish'n'chips anywhere for tea at Jackson Bay. Round
trip from Dunedin approx 950km but of course you can link up or leave at any
point.
The trip is obviously open to anyone else who is interested just give me a
call for details - the more the merrier.
As to where to go down here we could give you a couple of thousand Ks worth
of MX5 roads to experience with grin factors of 10+... just give me some
ideas of any specific sights you would like to see and I can "join the dots"
with a selection of the most interesting route options.

How long are going to be here Karl? As you can see, it won be long
enough. Don't see anyone recommending anything south of Q'stown and
that's where some of the best stuff is! See my private mail.
