Hmmmmm - thats a little harder.

I have tried but I end up contorted rather terribly between the steering
wheel and the gear shift!!! I've had a passenger put it back up while I
drove though... and while he won't admit it I think I heard something snap
in his lower back when he did it!! (big grin)

I'll be sure and keep an eye out for you at the lights whipping your top
off, Louise...
(sorry, couldn't resist saying it)

Indeed...
But... if you check my message - I worded it whipping THE top off not MY
top off to avoid such confusion.
A bit of sun around in Auckland today - might just have to do it on the
drive home...

Bah, I had to put my top up yesterday - something to do with all that
rain... No way will it be up tonight though

the Mk II's roof must be different - from the drivers seat I can easily
reach my left arm back to the handle in the middle of the roof and with one
smooth pull the roof's up - no problem - perhaps it's better balanced or
something.

Great advice... That is exactly what I do... or should I say did until my
shoulder went ... pop! followed by several expletives.

It is possible to do a one arm roof raise in MK1 from the drivers seat with
seat belt on! You dont even need to take your eyes off the road. Although it
probably depends on drivers height and arm length.

I'll give this method a go tonight. However I fear that my stature of five
foot nothing will preclude my ability to complete the undertaking
Anyway - enjoyable top down driving those lucky enough to be in the sun!

Sure it is.
Just order the ambulance before you attempt it.

just leave the rear window unzipped all the time and
you can flop the top up and down to your hearts
content! (takes maybe 5 secs, including lowering the
windows an inch) If puny little me (65kg!) can do,
I'm sure you all can too...

The point is that you are NOT twisting your back.
NB this does NOT work at speed ;^)

Have you worked out how to whip it back on again
from the driver's seat?

Nah. Arm strength and willingness to entertain chiropractors' bills for the

Well I can't put the top up while in the car so I either pull over or if in
(rarer) town get out & do it at the lights - only takes 5 seconds. Had a
Lotus owner tell me he was envious as it takes him 5 minutes to put up his
bows & install the top - by which time he is often wet

Remove seatbelt.
Lift arms high above head.
Lean to left so that right arm clears left side of seat.
Lean way way back and stare at sky.
Back of hands should be touching the roof in the vicinity of the handle. (Well
they do if you are my height.)
Hook fingers under metal bit.
Brace legs under whatever.
Clench back muscles.
Lift strongly and smoothly using the strength of your arms, not your back.
The point is that you are NOT twisting your back.
NB this does NOT work at speed ;^)

I love being able to sit at the lights between a break
in the rain and whip the top off (grin). Unzippings
too much of a hassle.
Have you worked out how to whip it back on again from the driver's seat?
