Headrest speakers

Post by Chrissy & Tony Hoys » Wed Feb 27, 2002 5:18 pm

Has anyone got thier headrest speakers wired up?
I have a very expensive stereo fitted in my CUTEMX but aparently they can
only accomodate 4 speakers, as there is 2 in the headrest and 1 in each door
- that's 6. Any suggestions out there?

Hi Chrissy
The headrest speakers are the same in both seats ie 1 right and 1 left so at the
plug at the back of the stereo you only have right and left front and right and left
back therefore only 4 speakers as such. I will email you the wirring diagram direct
as the list will not take graphics. If you like we can look at it for you at the Hamilton
Car show.

My reather ordinary stereo is a 4x 40W but drives all speakers. I assume they are paralleled up which would simply be a matter of matching impedances wouldn't it?

A couple of notes here
1. here is the speaker diagram
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/downloads/spe ... diag_2.gif
it was already there as I put it up for someone else

2. I would NOT recommend wiring after market stereos up in this
configuration for the headrest speakers.
IMHO they should be wired in series, not parallel

i.e.

Left stereo+ --- +[SP1]- ---------- +[SP3]- -------Left stereo -
Right stereo+ --------- +[SP2]- -------- +[SP4]- -----Right stereo -

This is harder to achieve, but wiring them in parallel presents a 2 ohm load
(with 4 ohm speakers which is common) to the stereo. Most are not designed
for it and will destroy the amplifier after a short period of time. You may
get away with it if the speakers are run at a very low volume, but I'd
re-wire them if it was me.

4ohms in series with 4Ohms = 8ohms = happy stereo

Hi Chrissy
I was going to replace my Alpine that came with Zed when I found out about
replacing the Headrest speakers on the net. I unzipped & replaced them with
4 Sony 4 inchers for about $200 - took about 45mins and - made such a
difference I kept the stereo!!

All depends on money :), makes the world go round u know.
If you want to use an amp (wich with am expensive stereo u should) then you can
do it easily, what is your current setup?

Scott.

Thanks everyone who helped me out with my speaker question, and the diagrams
etc, my pretty good mechanic of a husband (but certainly not an electrician)
has got advice from his fellow work mates as to how to read the diagrams and
advice from you guys and hopefully next week I will have music in my ears! I
guess it will be great to have music in that part of the car, top down and
can still hear it!
Cheers
