If the cops notice the hinge or whatever you'll also be kissing goodbye to a couple of Hundy, just like a Hamilton based club member found out a few years ago.
The most devious device I've ever seen was attached to the back of a Mitsi VR4. I was following it north of Meremere a few years ago, when I noticed that the rear plate suddenly fell down flat. I was thinking it was about to fall off, but then an oncoming car flashed its lights so I slowed down a little. The VR4 kept on going at about 115km/h, right past a semi-hidden speed camera. I later caught up to it in that nasty congested Auckland traffic and the plate was once again standing straight up, so I assume he must have had not only a hinge on his plate, but a lever or switch for raising or lowering it when a revenue collector was spotted.
