Ive just landed a 91 yellow and no longer will pre 93 mx5's be able to be
imported and registed for the road. The regs state no cars pre 96 cars but
certain cars meet the frontal impact standards prior to that.1800cc mx5's
are deemed to meet the frontal impact so these will be the only ones
imported in future. It will be interesting to see what happens to prices.
The new regulations are typically flawed. You can import a car from japan
provided it that is 20 years or older and road register it which seems
ludicrous.I could bring in a 1982 mitsubishi lancer no problems but not a
1992 evo 1.Also the frontal impact standards dont apply to utes, vans and
big 4wds(nissan patrols and the like). Figure that out and what is

That is because utes and 4wd's and cars as old as 20 years are less likety
to take away market share from the new car dealers who are the ones most
likely behind this regulation, afteral, we know the government doesn't realy
give a shi t about saving lives do they. Money is what the government care
about, and I would say less cars are going to change hands, weither it be
from cars yards or privately now becuase of this regulation, therefore the
govenrnment will lose income.
I know I sure as hell ain't going to spend more money just to buy a later
model car that is 'safer'.
All I have to do, and I intend to anyway, is fit a rollcage, race seats and
harnesses to my car and it will be safer than most new cars out there.
besides, you don't buy a car with the intention of crashing it do you? if
you did, you wouldn't buy an MX-5 would you!

It would be interesting if your whole business revolved around importing
1990-1993 cars - a bit like Ross here (Although he is lucky that he does
other stuff as well). The government weilds huge power that it could
theoretically put someone out of a legitimate business with a simple law
change. Maybe you could put forward a legal case for exmption Ross?
