Hood repair - Auckland

Post by Simon Lord » Sun Apr 01, 2012 3:32 pm

My hood has developed a leak - or rather, the seals have - the hood itself seems to be in good condition. Can anyone recommend someone on the North Shore who can do a good job of repair? I took it to someone who used to advertise in Top Down but they weren't particularly helpful. Have bought a spare set of second-hand rubbers but when I tried fitting them that just made things worse so I went back to the originals.

Hood Repair - Auckland

Post by Paul Murray » Thu May 03, 2012 9:37 am

Simon I can't help with where to get this repaired but my seals on the drivers side were leaking and I brought new replacements (rather expensive $355 for the 3 right side seals) had them installed by the chap who replaced my soft top 4 years ago and the new seals have also leaked. Water seems to come through into the front section of the seal and can leak quite badly. I wondered if the seal on the top of the windowscreen surround was an issue, it looks okay, the soft top closes up nice and firm onto the seal it hasn't leaked on the passenger side and when my hard top is on there isn't any trace of leaks.
The new rubbers have been adjusted as far out as they can so that they seal better against the glass but I still have water coming down the inside of the glass at times. I wonder if the new seals aren't as resilient as the old versions. The rubber seems to be rather soft and more porous looking than the older type.

Bigger pic - adjust nuts outward should make the top of the window move inwards to press harder against the rubber when closed!

We had similar problem with the wifes car. If left sitting in the rain, you could drive off but as soon as you slowed down for an intersection water would pour all over your knee. Cured it by adjusting the hood clamps a little tighter.

I've just noticed my recent MX5 acquisition has been leaking overnight with the downpour that's begun to hammer Auckland. It appears to be just a small drip from the drivers-side door with the seal between the two rubber parts not quite up to scratch:
(Can't link to the photo coz I've not got two posts yet)

Is it worth trying to repair on my own or just biting the bullet and going to see a specialist? Last thing I want is to sit down on a wet seat again in a few mornings time :-/

OK choice found it, but Adobe PDF reader complains it's the wrong password.

There was an 80MB RAR file which contains a ton of them, one is that service manual. Will try and investigate further, thanks for the heads up :)

Yup all lower case. Tried copy / pasting, typing it in manually, no joy :(

Will try and track it down from elsewhere. It was ~70MB big, sound about right?

Thanks :)

OK so I tracked down that file, managed to get past the password, strip it from the file, reupload it ... Is it worth posting the link here?

Also, appreciate the tip, it looks like a HUGE wealth of knowledge in there. I'll be tackling the door tonight. After last nights downpour, I'm keen to get it sorted

Google Docs complains about it not being able to scan it with Antivirus or being able to display it in the web browser, but I've tested it on another PC and it works sweet as :)

Hope that helps

Seems like everyone has the same problem. Drivers side only, same spot, I have it to. Unfortunately I could not open those files either. Will keep trying.

Thats odd Fleur, you should be able to. If you click on the Google Docs version, it'll first complain it's too big to preview it within your web browser, but you can still hit the "Download" button.

Then it'll say that it was too big for Google to scan it for viruses, but if you hit the "Download Anyway" button it'll let you :)

Because it's such as massive file, you'll need a semi-decent PC to open it, or otherwise it'll look like your PDF reader has just hung. Give it time to open :)

Yeah I've not had a chance to actually adjust anything on mine, there's been too much rain when it's not business-hours, and unfortunately I don't have a Garage or any shelter. I took a bit of tape which seems to have sealed it enough for now, but we'll see how things go over the next day or two.

I have noticed that water appears to be coming up through the floor though, specifically right underneath the foot pedals, as well as underneath the drivers seat. What a super buy this turned out to be :(
