Oil Filters, suggestions, brands to avoid etc...

Post by Mad Kiwi » Sun Mar 04, 2012 12:27 am

Hi Guys

I "think" I have read on some forums that some oil filters can direct bypass under certain conditions.

However this may be for other vehicles I was studying over the years....

Anyone brand better than the rest, all the same etc...sugestions?

Cheers
Mark.

Ryco filter from Supercheap does the job fine for me. Oil weight is far more important a choice for MX-5s than oil filter, in my opinion.

Usually there is a by pass system for the oil to flow if the filter blocks.
This is why changing you oil filter regularly is important.
I have used Ryco filter with no problems since I have owned the MX

Cool, thanks for that.

How frequently do you guys change the filter, or suggest on a track day / fang car....

Also, Seeing as oil weight comes up, what is the consensus on weight and you may as well throw in favoured brands, sources, price etc

Cheers
Mark.

Ummmm, got my car about 5 years ago and done just the one oil change when i got it  ,Mind you have only done a couple of thousand kays since owning it,Oil is still a good colour and hasn't burnt any.
I don't get to drive it often,But when i do i give shit....Safely as conditions allow.

But should do a oil and filter about once a year or 10,000km depending on how you use it,Higher grade fuel does help the engine oil stay cleaner for longer too.

I change my oil every 5000km, but usually change filter every second oil change, so every 10000km for me.

I use synthetic oils, 10W-40 is a good weight to start with. You could easily go up to a 15W-40 or down to a 5W-40. I prefer 10W-40 or 5W-40 myself, as I've found 15W-40 gives me a bit of noise - presumably from the hydraulic lash adjusters.

If you're one for oil flushes, I usually use a litre of thick, cheap oil and two or three litres of ATF. Let it idle for an hour or so, or take it on a short and GENTLE drive. Don't give the engine shit at this point because you've got very thin oil in your engine with this mixture. After you've let it circulate well through the engine, drain it all out very thoroughly, then replace with your good 10W-40 synthetic and a new filter.

I usually do an oil change and filter 5-7000 Kms using Castrol Magnatech.
Oil and filters are cheaper than engine repairs.

Once a year or every 10,000km. Whichever comes first. I use magnatec and Repco filters. :D

I change mine every 5,000km. I use a Gulf Western 15/w40 and a Wix Filter.
