MX-5 Convert

Post by m4vr1k » Wed Oct 06, 2010 10:35 pm

Evening all
My name is Zac, I am a sales rep for Autostop in Whangaparaoa, and on saturday, I will be picking up my first MX-5, I am very excited.
I must admit to being in the "that's a hairdressers/poofters car" crowd, but after doing a bit of research, and driving a few, I have completely changed my point of view. I now realise just how wrong I was about these incredible little machines.
I am purchasing a red 1989 model, with wind-up windows, no power steering and no aircon, I am lead to believe that this is one of the early NZ new models.
Well, I look forward to meeting you all
Cheers
Zac

P.S
If anyone needs any parts for their MX-5s, I am more than happy to give trade price to anyone off this forum, PM me if you are interested

Cheers for the welcome. Do you guys have regular regional meets and events? I know I would be keen to attend (and organise) some events up in and around Aucklans. Tthe Primera car club have monthly meets, and generally get great attendance at them.
I have been driving the work car (01 Corolla wagon, diesel, automatic, eew) for about 2 months now, and it has driven me round the bend not to have a car that is fun to drive. Cant wait for Saturday, will probably take a run up to Wellsford on SH16 to give the car a shakedown, and get a feel for how it handles. Do MX-5s have any quirks that I should know about before getting in and driving one?

They're very forgiving really, not much to mention - no ABS, and if you're not used to Rwd then don't mindlessly boot it on a wet roundabout until you get a feel for it. Other than that get out there and have fun!

Welcome Zac,
You won't regret buying an MX5, don't worry about the names you hear from people who are too frightened get in one and drive it the way it was designed to be driven.
I have only had my 5 for 18 months and never miss a chance to drive it (20,000 Kms in 16 months ).

Picked up the car about an hour ago. Needs a bit of TLC on the outside, but in a few weeks it will be shiny wonderful.
Time to go up SH16 to wellsford before the rain sets in!

Hi Zac

The MX5 Club's Northern Region next run is on Sunday 31 October up to Matahoke.
Check out http://www.mx5club.org.nz/events/view/280/67.html
New potential members always welcome.
I won't be there myself as I'll be racing my MX5 at Hampton Downs.
MX5's are versatile!!!!!!

Well, that was the most fun I have had in a car for a long, long time. Have to find a friendly car painter, as someone has repainted my car with a paintbrush at some point. Rest of it is in good nick though. No mechanical faults, no nasty sqeaks, rattles or vibrations. Cant wait to start spending some money on this car.

If you are interested in finding out what your car's like on the track the MX5 Club will be having its annual driver training day at Taupo race track on 26 March 2011. The morning will be spent doing activties such as a slalom, motorkana, cornering etc and in the afternoon its full track time.
