no power under load when cold
hi, we have a 98 1.8 rs, it will not go up our drive when cold without much revving and clutch dragging(ugh) have changed plugs and leads, have just discovered that the breather pipe that goes from the bottom of the rear of the inlet manifold to the exhaust is missing in the parts diagram it is called the pipe egr which is under the egr valve, could this be the problem?the car runs ok the rest of the time.

its the EGR pipe wich shouldnt caus the peroblem its just for emissions
there will be blanks where it was connected
when was the last time you did the plugs?
if you havent done them thats where i would start
itll probibly will have bkr5e 11 plugs in there (cheap and plentiful)
try get some bkr6eix 11 (not so cheap but a good iridium plug)
if that doesnt help then replace the leads
the ecu will be putting more gas in when its cold so you will need a good spark to burn it

I am not sure if the JDM cars had EGR till NB which could explain why the pipe is missing.
The ecu has a separate temperature sensor which allows it to adjust the mixture at various temps and also the idle speed control. If this is not working properly it could be causing your problem. Did you notice if the plugs were showing signs of excess fuel when you took them out?
The coil problem of the 1.8s would be more likely to manifest itself at high temps rather than when cold. I have a spare if you want to try it however it is the 3 terminal variety. There are 2 types, 3 and 4 terminal. If you are in Auckland send me a PM and we can organise something.
Cheers
