NB 5spd vs 6spd

Post by Spyder » Sat Apr 07, 2018 8:39 pm

Aloha,

It’s been a long time between drinks (sold our NA in ‘98), but going to get back into it and build an MX-5 for this year’s Targa.

98-00 NB seems like the go, but a couple of questions;

5spds seem to have the redline marked at 7k
6spds seem to have it marked at 7k4

Is this consistent? Anyone know why? Neither are VVT from what I can see.

Focus will be on suspension/wheels/tyres/brakes initially rather than hp’s, so given that, is there really a compelling reason to go 5 vs 6 (or vice versa)?

Cheers in advance, Tony

There is no difference in the engine between the normal NB (5 speed) and the RS (6 speed) so the different red line is probably related more to Mazda's expectations of the type of driver than for any technical reason.
You might want to look at the engine revs v road speed relationship before deciding on which gearbox to use.
