S Special

I have a 92 S Special (black of course) which has all the bells and whistles including Bilstein suspension, Mazda Surround sound, Nardi wheel, BBS Mags, turret brace etc. but no leather, are there many of these around the country, the odd black one Ive seen seems to be V Spec

Not sure about 92 models, but I have a 94 S-Special, also black. No leather - we looked for quite a while to find a Black 1.8 without leather (personal opinion, but I find leather gets too hot in summer, and you slip around on it when cornering...)

The 94 S-Specials were black or a metallic blue colour (which I know of a couple around... Nigel E used to own one)

The Bilsteins, Nardi bits, 'MSSS (Surround sound)', & BBS wheels have long since been removed though (mostly by me). I think your engine mounted brace would be aftermarket - I don't think is was an S-Special item (I know I added mine later) but could be wrong.

I've had mine from newly imported in 1999.

Shall we set up a very exclusive S-Special Club?

Hi I have an S Special 93 black with bilsten suspension. It was standard with a lower suspention brace on the back. I have since put a lower on the front and a tower on the back. Mine is cloth and the mags have long gone, replaced with series 2 15" I have had it just over one year.

Interesting responses. Perhaps there is not many around the country. I must admit that when I bought mine about 7 years ago with about 80k on it now 140K I didn't know what I was buying, I thought it was just an mx5 with mags until I had done the research. I'm sure the dealer didn't either. I have been thinking of upgrading but cant decide what to replace it with.

With MX5s, there are a few uncommon models - but really they are only
valuable to people who want that sort of thing (which is a small
minority among overall car buyers in NZ)

It is like the NB Evolution Orange/Gold. They are quite rare, but still
not priced above a standard MX5. Most dealers don't know about the
commonality or not of certain models, and certainly don't seem to market
to the existing MX5 crowd. Like you, most people buy MX5s, then learn
all about them afterwards - not the other way around.

I was the same to a certain extent - I _did_ know about the leather
options, engine sizing & other additions from 93-94 etc and I knew it
was an S-Special, but didn't know how many others were around or if it
was rare or not.

Some models can fetch a little more(such as the 10th anniv model), but
only if the dealer has specifically imported it with that knowledge in,
or someone has requested that model (or if a dealer gets lots of phone
calls...!)

Also remember, that this forum only has a 100+ members subscribed -
there may well be a lot more S-Specials around than you think.

Obviously, upgrading would be personal choice and depend on how much
cash you have to burn, but my choice would be if I was in your position:

1. Spend the money on performance upgrades - starting with suspension,
programmable ECU, brakes, supercharger/turbo. Or a fun stereo system.
Or both.
2. Stick with an NA, but go with newer, well kept model like a 94-97.
They are pretty cheap now. In black obviously. Or buy a red one and
get a high quality black paint job with lots of clearcoat.
3. Do both 1 & 2. Performance mod and lighten your current model, and
buy a newer comfortable one for those trips to the office in traffic.
4. Shiny Black 2001 NB. mmmm. Although I'd rather have 2 differently
setup NAs - but it depends on your garage size I suppose!

I have a 1992 Black V-Special edition with leather interior

I actually quite like the leather... VERY cold on a winters night getting in the car to go home at 7pm though

Mags on it are 17" Stilettos which Im looking to replace again with some 18" dished rims, so I cant say what was origionally on mine.

The Nardi steering wheel and gearknob were replaced by the previous owner with a Momo Millenium wheel and gearknob (Ive just replaced the gearknob again because it looked disgusting!!)

Otherwise... Its still tan leather interior and Ive just had half of it resprayed brilliant black so its looking nice and shiny as ever! (Got it back today)
