What does new registration cost?

Post by NicF » Fri Feb 21, 2014 12:04 pm

Hi all

I have the opportunity to buy a slightly damaged car with no rego. What is involved in getting a new one, in terms of cost/inspections? I believe the inspections are more rigorous than WOF?

$750 or some damn thing like that is what I've heard. I have also heard $400 and $600.

I'd assume the worst and use it as a leverage point when negotiating. If it doesn't cost so much - Bonus!

if i buy a car that needs a re-vin i'll add $2000 to the cost on top of repairs that i can see for the vin check, repair cert, rego, and any other small repairs thatll also need doing when it fails the vin inspection.

And if it fails you have like 28days to fix it or you have to pay to get it inspected again I believe!
I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

It's a thorough check of a car, much more detailed than a WoF, they check the car for how loud it is (incase you have an aftermarket exhaust) rust etc.

It is pretty common for older cars (90's and older) to fail first time! Check rust around the battery and stuff, a lot of things that would normally slide past a WoF wouldn't pass re-registration.

About 10 years ago I bought a 1990 MR2 that had been off the road in storage for 2.5 years and needed a VIN check.

although the vehicle was in really good condition, the entire process was a complete nightmare and I would personally not go through the expensive drawn out process ever again unless the car was exceptionally special or rare (and even then I would be reluctant)

its totally up to you, but my experience with the process was not pleasant or easy.
