mx5 gtx engine?

mx5 gtx engine?
Hi guys I've heard few things about Mazda gtx engines bolting up to the mx5 rwd box can anyone fill me in a bit more?? Because this sounds like it could be a bit of a fun!

I have currently done this conversion pretty simple to do, just need to change most of the coolant pipping over and to a MX5 oil pump and sump.
I would advise you change the GTX cylinder head for a MX5 (99+) one as they flow a lot better,
The GTX block has a few bonuses over the MX5 BP like oil squirters to cool the underside of the piston, and oil cooler on the intake side of the block.

My 1600 gtx didnt fit the mx5 gearbox,or the sump,oil pick-up but most other parts were identical or easily swapped over.

Cheers for that i assume your running the gtx ecu over modified mx5 or a stand alone?
Just quietly how much power to the rear is it making? More than sufficient? Im after something that i can drive daily with out to much issue and really have some smoking fun every so often if you know what i mean ;O

Running megasquirt at 9psi 200hp at the flywheel and 171hp at the wheels but i am planniing to run 14psi by the end of the year with a few other mods so will be interesting to see the HP gains.Because i do track days i didnt plan to go overboard... more for reliability and driveability.My set-up is more like a supercharger feel.
All 1600 mx5 engines have piston oil squirters so in some respects the 1800 went backwards if they dont have them.

Thanks heaps! That sounds very much like what Im after! Sounds like more than enough!! So 9psi is spooling nice and quick?? No major lag or anything?? lag is not my friend! And thats on all standard internals in engine? REDBEN earlier suggested changing head to a mx5 (99+) for better flow have you done same or just gtx head? [/quote]

Currently drawing up plans as to what route I am going to go down(been offered a GTX engine at a reasonable price) and I've found alot of the info on converting to a GTX engine as being quite vague and often contradicts what other forums/sites say.

Mx5 head with gtx cams,valves,springs & HLA's...Mx5 block with gtx crank & con-rods.Cylinders bored over-size with relevant turbo pistons [came from Oz i believe].I could have used the gtx pistons but my cylinders were scored so it needed a re-bore.
BUT..i could have dropped the gtx head complete with internals on to the mx5 block & put on the cam sensor & coil-pack from the mx5.The mx5 inlet & exhaust manifolds are identical so will bolt up...but the turbo & exhaust manifold will all face the wrong way so i did a custom header.
The cam sprockets are identical,the cam cover will fit...the thermostat housings are re-workable as the water exits the rear of the gtx head.All gaskets were identical.HLA's are identical.
The oil-pump,timing cover gaskets,oil pick-up & sump were all interchangeable from memory.
The only reason the block bell housing is different is because the gtx was front wheel drive.

why bother????
the mx5 engine can easily take more boost and HP than the diff and gearbox can handle. why use low compression pistons when the mx5 ones are perfectly capable of running boost.
this isnt the eighties where tuning was so bad you needed low comp to stop your engine from detonating.
And NO you cant use a GTX ecu or turbo manifold and the gtx VJ turbo aint that great anyway. the VF10 is better.
so to conclude...leave the GTX stuff to the FWD crowd and spend your money on a good turbo/ECU and modern injectors, and a good clutch.
i know your a newb here, so just keep it simple.
my stock standard engined 1600 has been making close to 200WHP for seven years now and i havent touched a thing on the engine since the day i fitted the turbo. there is NO point in putting anything GTX on an mx5 for a daily driven road car.
the mx5 engine can easily take more boost and HP than the diff and gearbox can handle. why use low compression pistons when the mx5 ones are perfectly capable of running boost.
