Insurance

Post by chris » Mon May 14, 2012 3:19 pm

Ok, so long story short I am 18 Y.O. and have had a claim as I was run off the road and the driver didn't stop.

I can only just afford third party fire and theft.

What I am wondering.. is is a MX-5 a high theft rate? according to Club Auto it has a really high theft rate?

Top 10 Stolen Cars (Source: AA Insurance claims data 2007-2011)

1. Honda Torneo
2. Nissan Elgrand
3. Subaru Impreza
4. Subaru Forester
5. Subaru Legacy
6. Nissan Skyline
7. Nissan Presea
8. Mitsubishi Libero
9. Nissan Cefiro
10. Nissan Sunny

The biggest problem is that the soft top is easy to get into.
Premiums are naturally going to be high because you are 18!

I understand the high premiums... but I think that $1020 for third Party Fire and Theft is a bit excessive?

mx5's ARE NOT a high theft rate...

in fact i dont know of anyone in the club who has had theirs stolen. more likely to have your soft top slashed so some loser can steal your $.50 in loose change and a cd.
MX5's are cheap to fix, not very powerful, low crash rate...god only knows wy insurance companies seem to hate them so much.
if your worried about theft then invest in one of the $180 GPS tracking devices so you can locate the car straight away if stolen

25 years old and I pay something like $650 per year for full cover with State (and have done for the past couple of years before turning 25), thats insured for $6000 including suspension modifications and hard top. If you're really stuck you could try NAC, they seem to charge about $1200 no matter what you drive or how long you've been insured with them.

What the hell. The Nissan sunny is not a car I'd have thought top 10 worthy. Mind you I don't know a few of those nissa s listed, but the sunny? To me its a cheap rental car...

Awesome, you just described me. Might give them a call tomorrow to get a quote. Been with AA for years at about 300/year on third party

Is it really worth full insurance on a car under 5k. With premiums like those quoted above after a few years you have paid for a new car. Third party a must though. $120 through AMI but I'm old 8)

I'm 22 and have full cover with state for about $600 a year or so. Excess is quite high because of the type of car it is (gutless manual RWD 2seater sports car)....

Insured for $3000.

 try a broker, they shop around for the best price, or try and lump it in with the olds house insurance

I have know a couple of members in the past who have had thier car stolen - just for a joyride mind...
And as the MX5 gets popular with the "younger" guys with drifting etc, I'm sure the theft rate will increase...

Its because they are very easy to break into and start. I had one recently that was stolen off the property (Luckliy the local Detective was walking home from work that night and called his mates. Both offenders were caught down the road and are now in jail). When I went to get parts to repair it, the wrecker had a whole stack of rear quarterlite windows and ignition modules....as he sells them often!

I suppose it makes sense. Break in, free petrol until it runs out or something like that

Hmmmmm... I think 3rd party with GPS tracker is the way to go!

Plus more freedom when it comes to modifications with 3rd party.. And there really is little point in getting full cover!

Unless someone without insurance runs into you and you're left having to chase them up, potentially through the Court system, all by yourself. Assuming you even manage to get their details.
