Hi Guys, thought some of you might like to see the in car with Kasey and I doing some laps from recently.
Donovan makes a guest appearance at about 6.00 ish....read the blurb and you will see why etc...being a smart arse I dropped down an extra gear to try and slide past him...
edit - forgot the blurb...Donovan was having brake problems (extreme heat) and is normally 1.5 secs a lap quicker.

Hopefully have some race footage up from todays Classic Japanese Race...my first ever car race and did okay I think... 5th - 13th - 7th
Qualifying was VERY wet and managed to come 3rd out of 16. To be fair a few of the quick guys opted out and I suspect some of the others decided to just use it for a sighting session...but im gonna take it anyway
Will post up the footage of the first race when it uploads....unfortunately Kasey got a bit keen with his Hero3 and I cant seem to watch it due to the MEGA high resolution he recorded it at....
Hopefully the you tube upload works..Will link it here when it finishes.

Man that was an awesome video, made BMWs look slow but that Porsche seemed decently quick for an oldie.
I really want to get on track now, need to sort a dam rollbar!

Hi Mad Kiwi, what did you need to do to get the roll cage legal for the road? Do you have a motorsport licence or did you just get it certed?

Hi RMS
I had a lot of drama to do that. MANZ have changed the roll bar rules significantly of late and it makes it extremely difficult to install a roll bar let alone a roll cage. Fortunatley Paul from Motorsport Fabrications in Silverdale worked through it. I recommed anyone considering a MANZ legal rollbar or cage to use him as he has current knowledge and permission to resolve these issues.
We had a couple of visits by a MANZ official during the process to resolve various things the book doesn't allow for etc.
I had to apply for a M/sport licence, have the cage signed off AT a race meeting by a scrutineer and compete in at least one race meeting. Not to mention have the car certified and have a MANZ logbook for the cage registering at least one (possibly even more) race meetings.
Was a lot of work.
But I now have one of only a few (im guessing) road legal, caged MX5's around....
Keeping the car road and race legal was the drama. If it was purely a race car a lot of the issues would not have been a problem.

So you got the motorsport licence so that you could fit the cage or do you need it for events anyway?
I'm curious because after reading the LVV standard I think it would be possible to install a roll cage into an mx5 and just get it certed, but I haven't been able to put it to the test so to speak. I have a mazda speed full bolt in cage which I took out when I got my car certed because at the time I assumed that it was not possible to get it certed with the cage.
The standard says:
2.4(8) A roll-cage may be positioned within the B-Zone of a low volume
vehicle occupant cell, provided that
(a) the vehicle is not a modified production Class MA, with unitary
body construction, which has a permanent roof structure; and
(b) the requirements of 2.4(9) are met.
from:
http://lvvta.org.nz/documents/standards ... Impact.pdf
so because the MX5 doesn't have a permentant roof structure, it should be possible to fit a cage. Apparently there is more detail about this in the hobby car manual but since I don't have a copy I haven't been able to confirm it.
If I ever need another cert I'll be trying it out for sure, I guess the only downside is that if you go to all the trouble of fitting a cage, it may as well be MANZ compliant anyway... but this would mean that the car could be operated without a motorsport licence at least.
of course it might not be practical to fit a cage subject to the restrictions of the LVV code in an MX5 anyway, I'm not sure whether the MANZ guidelines are less restrictive since you would be wearing a helmet?

I "believe" the rules are that to have a roll cage in a road registered vehicle it must have a motorsport application. To this end a log book is required to prove you have a motorsport application and that it has been used in that application at least once....
But I could be wrong......
Seeing as I legitmately DO have a motorsport application going to all the hassle of getting a licence, getting the log book and competing in an event was the plan anyway so while a drama it was also the goal.....

That's what I thought too but the documents suggest otherwise since the MX5 doesn't have a 'permanent roof structure'.
I'll have to try it sometime because I would like to put a proper cage in my car but since I don't live in NZ any more I wouldn't drive the car enough to maintain a motorsport licence.
I'm visiting my cousin in May who has a copy of the hobby manual so maybe that will make things clearer.
