I have a 1990 MX5 with manual 5 speed gearbox. Does the gearbox have separate oil from the engine?

Sure does, also has a "turret" which Is located where the shifter goes in three M6 bolts hold the shifter in below the larger rubber boot with 4 bolt securing it. Make sure the oil in the turret is clean as this aids good shifting :)
