Need to find a MX5 mechanic ...

Post by Blubee » Fri Mar 16, 2012 3:12 pm

Hey
Blubee is a 1990 MX5 (really????) and shes screaming her nut off at me! Literally!
I was told by a friend that either the belts need tightening OR the air con needs to come out as there is a ?broken? bearing and get a shorter belt.
Been a savy kindof person, I've googled that awful noise and have read how to do it and seen the pix - but as wonderful as that sounds, I'm not really in the mood to munt my baby - thus I rather have it fixed by someone who knows what the are doing - without the big ripoff!
So - if anyone knows someone who knows what the heck they are doing please let me know ... referrals are good things! And if anyone knows what the estimated cost of repair is - please let me know!

Had Bluee for around 4 years and this is the 1st repair thing that I've had to do ...
Thanks!

Sounds like it just needs a belt replacement to me. When my alternator belt got a bit loose it howled something shocking.

Well, when I start her up something is making a hell of a screaming noise. When I accelerate it gets a bit more high pitched. I'll turn off the engine and restart a couple of times n that stops it... Well it did the first few times. I had the radiator fixed about 6 weeks ago. Will record n post.

Replace the alternator/accessory belts. They're cheap enough replacements and if you're doing one you may as well do them both.

Probably just need to be tightened
is there a date written on the valve cover or a sticker in the enginebay that says when the belt was last changed?

Don't think I've ever seen this done for accessory and alternator belts, though certainly the timing belt.

9 times out of 10 the problem is the timing belt

I doubt the timing belt will scream, it has teeth on it and can't slip.....

If you want a commercial mechanic, the guys behind me in Barrys Point Rd look after our two.

AutoPal, ask for Andrew.

I think the issue is more the accessory/alternator belts slipping, usually because of the belt surface getting glazed, or loosening up. My belts squeal a bit in cold or wet weather, but are fine otherwise.

That suggests to me they need replacing rather than tightening, though.

i always roughen up the pulleys with 80 grit sand paper. its better to make the pulleys have more grip on the belt rather than over tightening the belt as it over loads the bearings

Okay, I'm back - sorry for the departure from my own question forum..Had the belts replaced. apparently there is "play" I'm the passenger side fan ie it moves a bit. However a new fan is gonna cost around $600.... The other school of thought ie wkmates opinion is that it could be a bearing in the air con...

Take the air-con belt off & try it-it wont hurt anything but will help to eliminate or confirm if its the air-con.

Also you could disconect the fan electrical plugs to check both fans!
Only do for a short while & keep an eye on your temp gauge!

I would discourage removing aircon unless it is a race orientated car. Of our two mx5's the un aircon one is bloody hot and uncomfortable driving around in.

With such a small cabin and often a black roof, it can get pretty damn hot, not to mention being baked/scorched under our ozone hole sun....

If you pull the plug on each fan independantly it shouldn' over heat and you can easily tell if that is the cause...
