All about air bags....

Post by poison » Mon Jul 31, 2006 3:35 pm

1) Does anyone know where are the air bag 'trigger' sensors located?

2) Does anyone else think it's kind of dumb to put the horn button in the middle of the steering wheel right on top of the air bag……? Couldn't they have put it on the sides like many cars do?
Quite likely scenario – Some A'hole in a 4WD runs a red in front of you  , you hit the brakes and push the horn button with your hand or thumb, but sadly hit the 4WD… and the airbags operates with your hand or thumb on top of it…. Oooohhhh now that's gonna hurt!

3) And everyone knows someone, who knows somebody else, who met somebody, who 's cousin's mate was in a car when the airbag went off  . Has anyone actually first hand been in a car when the airbag went off? How loud was it?
 Gazda in the white HOT Mazda

Think of the most difficult place to put it (no not there, get your mind
out of the gutter!). The sensor is integrated into the controller, which
is bolted to the inside of the firewall, just below the dash. There is
a special bracket, which means you have to remove the *entire* dash to
replace it.

Once it's gone off, it will refuse to work again, and will require replacing.

I think it's kind of dumb putting an air bag there in the first place.

This is a sports car for frick's sake, safety is enacted by not hitting
anything in the first place.

I can't imagine going for the horn if i'm about to hit something. More likely
i'll be trying to steer around the obstacle.

That was not my experience with my mx-5. I did end up with small burns on the sleeves of my fleece pullover, though. I ended up getting a puffy lip from the airbag, too. I attribute that to being short and having to sit close to the wheel. That was better than having my head hit the steering wheel, though. As far as the sound goes... I don't remember it being that loud and I don't think I have any hearing loss from it. The "dust" released when it went off was awful. I had a hard time getting the smell out of my clothes. I didn't get seriously injured, though, I guess that's what counts, right? :)
