Ah what memories, the old MSD 6 Speed Detector! They could really warm you
up on a cold morning, I don't think that helped your virility/fertility
though. We use to have a lot of fun with them on the Blenheim-Picton Road
about an hour before sailing time. Taking off in pursuit was a bit
impractical though, but in those days people used to stop and they generally
called you "Sir", How things have changed!

Yes, I had a Tait Miniphone in a little grey box on the back of my Norton
and a Pye Cambridge (you are getting on if you can remember them) in a
Leyland P76 (You have no taste at all, if you can remember them!)

I did go to the radio depot a couple of times. Blokes I also recall in
Blenheim were Steve Whitehead, (also my Sergeant in South Auckland and now
watch house officer in Porirua) and Dave Frances, now an Inspector I
believe.

Thinking back, that was actually nearly 30 years ago, kinder and gentler
times.

Regards

Eric

Not only do I have a "Cambridge" converted to 2m amateur band but a "Tait" that is even older! What does that say about me? I even remember using both on their original frequencies.

Starting to turn into an old fogey's club!
I started work in 1967, so that dates me. Most radios then still had valves
in. Many on this list probably don't know what they were.
I remember trying to keep Pye and Tait radios going in those little boxes on
the back of various motorbikes. Never got to ride the bikes though. Did give
a few motorists a fright when testing car installations on some of the back
roads of Blenheim. Even remember the P76!
Times have certainly changed, as have the attitudes unfortunately.
We used to get the old ex MOT cars to use for work vehicles, still painted
black and white. Everybody used to behave very well and always gave way at
intersections when they saw you on the road.

Just had another fault in Picton so had a pleasant trip in the MX5 (and got
paid for it). Done more than 2000km since last Sunday morning and hardly
seen any cops on the road. Don't know what's happened to them.

Grant.

ps. Keith, I am ZL2BK.

You mean "tubes", as we Yanks said... and there was none of this
"instant on" stuff, they took a good minute or so to warm up before the
radio was operational.
Even remember the P76!
Ahhh, the Aussie Edsel!
Blenheim, land of blue skies, bright sun, empty roads and the most
feral
cops in NZ.
..mmmm I remember a particular M.L. some years ago

Maybe us old guys should combine and form a "geriatrics" chapter of the
Club! After all, we already own the worlds fastest wheelchairs!

Hey Grant,

I worked for AWA almost as long ago as that, I can't remember the name of the
little VHF mobile we manufactured though... I did a bit of work on VHF
receiver design. Tait were our main competition.
