In 1970, the BERTONE company displayed a "concept " car named
http://www.carsfromitaly.com/lancia/con ... ratos.html at the Turin
Motor Show. The car was a low wedge shaped vehicle that utilised a Fulvia
motor and gearbox midmounted. Access to the car was through the windscreen.
Within this beautiful but highly impractical car, the people at Lancia saw
the potential for a special build of 500 cars ( as required under Group 4 of
the rules governing motor sport ) to use as a Rally winner. The Lancia
Strato's was to become known as the first homologation special.

The requirement for 500 cars proved to be a problem for the company. On one
hand there were not enough to warrant the massive tooling costs required to
build a production car, and on the other hand, far too many for hand
building. Thus, all of the chassis and fibreglass bodywork was created
outside the factory at the Bertone workshops. A full scale mock-up named the
"Strato's HF" was displayed at the 1971 Turin Motor Show on the Bertone stand.

I imagine that has to do with what you can get up to in the back rather the
front.

I did not think that the Stratos had a back seat but from memory the Transit's claim to fame was it's contribution to the progress of early 70's rock bands - Slade etc - hence the need for the back seat area.

In 1970, while working as a pilot in Sydney, I decided to buy a BMW 1600,
brand new, for $4800. Enroute to Capitol Motors in Auburn to jack this up,
my mate and I stopped at the Bath Arms in Burwood for a lunchtime libation.
Right next door was Thompsons Performance Cars, and in the middle of the
yard, a 1963 Maroon Aston Martin DB4 GT at $4200. (Bear in mind that a new
DBS V8 was only $22K). I never have owned a BMW, but for nine months I drove
the absolute ultimate in cars that make me go Phwoar!

The downside to the story is that I decided it was impractical to bring it
back to NZ, and sold it for $4500. I thought I did well. The guy I sold it
to re-sold it in 1990 to a buyer in Adelaide for $186,000, oh well, easy
come easy go!

No, not the Monty - that debuted at the Montreal World Fair 1967.
Now if you want to see one of these cars driven in anger, there is one
racing in New Zealand (well it will be once the repairs are completed from
the last race crash!) It is bright green and was brought over from UK by
returning NZer Phil Hehir.

the quiz on the club website at http://www.mx5club.org.nz/quiz/. Tough but
fun.

Thanks Phil - I haven't updated it for a year or 2 - but anyone is welcome
to submit a bunch of questions (and answers...) - send them to me off list
otherwise they will be archived, and that's no fun ;) Actually, if someone
is really keen, I can give them the password to maintain it - I think I
installed a web interface to it way back when...

PS Hey, does this mean you guys are back on topic again...?!?! ;p

And Fiat (Lancia) built a wonderful 1.6l twin cam engine that they also put
in a ragtop (124 Spyder), the only difference being that the Mazda can be
driven most weekends without working on it! Go the Japanese!!!

And I used to have a Lancia Stratos slot car which I painted in the Alitalia
colours of the works rally cars and now I have an MX5... (it took me ages -
every stripe had to be masked individually and painted before moving on to
the next one 24 hours later).
