1.8 in my 1990

Post by Mikkels » Sun Sep 14, 2003 10:07 pm

Well the installation happened this weekend and went
surprisingly well. I struck a few problems along the way.
1. I needed to extend the wire to the single wire sensor on
the back of the head because it comes from the other side on the 1.8.
2. I had to remove and swap the ac compressor mount from the
1.6 block. 1.6 compressor is slightly different. (only
found this out when the motor was in the car.
3. I had to drill out the permanent live connector on the
wiring loom as the 1.8 alternator bolt was a size bigger for this connection.
4. One of the fans on the radiator won't fit as the
resinator box on the air trunking interferes majorly with
it. (no room). I need a solution for this guys. I have the
AC still on the car and guess I will need the services of
both fans. Are there slimmer versions?

A few things went wrong on the install like - one of the
injectors was not seated and fuel leaked everywhere, one of
the mounting bolts for the cast housing on the side of the
block was missing on the 1.8 causing a big coolant leak
which took me 3 hours to find.

Anyway to the exciting bit, turned the key and she fired
right up and sat there idling sweetly - outstanding. A
blast around the block revealed a bit more torque but
nothing startling. Back in the garage and checked and
advanced the timing to 14 degrees. NOW YOU ARE TALKING!!!

Smooth as silk - a huge difference to the 1.6. Also a much
more torquey drive. Seems a little breathless at full noise
probably because of the 1.6 airbox etc. More mods to
follow, I have an airflow sensor from a 1.8 Astina which
looks like it might go straight in.

Any way I'm rapt, will upload photos to the site tomorrow.

Hi Don, If you don't mind an intake that doesn't look "factory fitted" (I get the impression you want everything looking stock) you could fit a intake kit from Good-win Racing, or perhaps fabricate your own version of it (much cheaper). They claim a 10hp increase. It should get rid of the breathlessness at full noise, and it does away with the standard cross over tube and its resonator.

1.8 in my 1990

Hi Mathew

I'll take a look - thanks. I'm using the 1.6 airflow sensor
so that makes a bit of a difference to the setup that will
be compatible with my hybrid.
