Air filtration test for K&N on a Miata 92

Hi, I was thinking about fitting a K&N filter but am having second thoughts
after coming across this website when I did a Google search:

Does anyone have any comments on K&n air filters?

A guy did a test of several different air filters a
while ago on www.miata.net
he tested foam Vs cotton Vs k&n and he found that
there was very little in it but the k&n was the
"best". its rumoured bad filtering performance was
dispeled to a large degree as he did a comparison of
filtered air for the three and they were pretty much
the same. The biggest restriction in the mazda is the
air box and its restrictive elbow, so changing filters
in a standard air box is going to net not a big
difference. although youll gain a reusable filter.

Has anyone fitted one of these units, and what are your findings?

The Loch system seems to be highly regarded, which
seems credible given my own freakish experiments with
the intake

Also the breathing mods work well as a
set, hence the common abbreviation IHE (intake,
headers, exhaust). A thrifty person could do the lot
for well under $1k !

I found with my '96 that it became a lot torquier,
noisier, and revvier... and fun

Considered DIY ? (chk pg4 here )

For what it's worth, I made a cold air system using the original air box and K
& N filter. I cut an extra inlet opposite the original and ducted cold air
from the cowl area near the washer bottle. I also ducted cold air from the
radiator intake area. There's a gap between the bottom corners of the rad and
the under panel, I ran 100 mm ducting from there to the air box. This mod,
plus headers, 14* timing, splitfire plugs, etc. gave me 100 - 105KW on Mazdas
dyno.

I spoke to Mr Stewart and he quoted me Aus$300. Freight will be added to that.
He said that packed the parcel would measure about 25 x 25 x 50cm and be quite
manageable to carry.
He was very reluctant to discuss supplying a set of extractors because without
seeing the current set, he could not guarantee that he could match the
fittings - Mazda have built several variants it seems that have caused both
him and his customers much anguish in the past.

I have the induction kit and the full exhaust system.

27000 k's and working perfectly.
1.8 with Ngk plugs and racingbeat leads. 14 degree timing.
no cat, 113.8 (dynapak) Kw's

Much improved driving. Large improvement in Torque somewhere around 20% from
memory.
Wide flat band and smoother throttle response
That's all the secrets out isn't it?

Thats interesting. I have a set of his extractors on my 1.6, and there was no
mention of this problem when I bought that... I wonder where the variation
is?

The NB/NA model difference I can understand, but even
then it's just a matter of where it mates up to the
exhaust pipe flange (so I hear)
