Tyres (Kumho comments?)

Post by Gary Morrison » Fri Aug 01, 2003 10:14 am

Hi Jeff,

Have you tried the Kumho Ecsta you mention? Colin is running Kumhos, although
his may be different to the MX.

Looking at their site the two possibilities seem to be Ecsta 712, and the
Ecsta MX. The charts show the 712 having much better wet grip than the MX...

Colin, any comments on the current offerings???

Gary

FWIW, the latest candidate in the 12 month search for
RE-71 replacements is ... Kumho Ecsta MX ! Grippy
with stiff sidewalls :D

Toyo T1-S sounds grippy but mushy.
Bridgestone S-03 is pretty expensive.
Falken Azenis are outrageously expensive (4x US
price). But they seem to have the stiff sidewalls to
give the instant turn in that I like.
Neovas sound great but are only available secondhand.
Maybe there's someone who imports tyres to order ??

I'm just going by the comments from the revheads in
miataforum's tires forum. It seems to be on par with
the Falken Azenis (which is a $400 tyre here!!)

Tyres (Kumho comments?)

Gary,
I am Using Kumho Ecsta 712's on Roslyn.
They are 205-45-16. The Wheels are the 2001 model Standard. Pretty I think.
And a 40mm offset.
I have played with the pressure and the alignment to try and get the best from
these.
I drive the car in a very sporting manner and am quite particular about the
way it copes with the road.
Suspension plays a large part in deciding how a particular tyre will perform.
I have lowered the car and use Bilstein shocks, racingbeat swaybars and
support brackets.
What I mean is that to a point the stiffer the suspension the higher demands
are placed on the tyre.
So the tyre/ suspension should be viewed as one unit.
IE: No compliance in the car and no compliance in the tyre = very skittery
driving
Some compliance in the car and some in the tyre = best. especially if you
can adjust them both.
Lots of compliance in the car and lots in the tyre = wallowy old pig.

oops caught myself... I could add much to these thoughts. Boring old bugger
that I am.
Two last things though. I completely agree with Lou that second hand tyres are
a big NO. I would even ban their import and sale if I could.
And if I was replacing the Kumho I would use Goodyear G3D3's.
I have had some experience with them recently on an Audi, a Bmw and aToyota
the same model as my work car.

Hope this helps

Forgot to say,
You are welcome to have a test drive and see what you think,
I would value your thoughts and as I am arranging some changes for the car in
the near future
a Control person to evaluate the difference would be very helpful.

Cheers Colin
