rev limiter
The rev limiter on my 1990 NZ new 1600 does not seem to be working
anymore. Revs up to 7500+ rpm (I quickly released the pedal)
Can anybody tell me:
How does the thing actually work
What could be the problem
How do I fix it
Cheers

rev limiter
The rev limiter is in the ECU that runs the engine, and I find it very hard
to beleive that its stopped working...
The tacho is not entirely accurate, and maybe its accuracy has slipped a
little? (never heard of it, but more likely than rev limiter to stop
functioning)
The tacho needle tends to "overshoot" simply because of its mass and the
speed its moving, and thus, will overshoot more in lower gears (because its
accellerating faster)... try finding the rev limiter in 2nd hear (just
short of 100kmh), or, if you dare in 3rd (illegal speeds ~ 130-140? I
forget)
Provided your engine is properly warmed up, you wont do any damage with a
slight over-rev (say, 105 kmh in second gear) if the rev limiter really isnt
working.
Good luck,
Fletch.

Oooo, I wonder if mine works. I've NEVER revved above 6500ish so IThe rev limiter on my 1990 NZ new 1600 does not seem to be working

wouldn't know!

There is a slight discrepancy in rev limiters, some cut at 7200, others
higher. Then there is rev counter error to consider. If you're determined to
find it, keep your foot in it till it cuts, you won't damage a healthy engine
up to 8000.

I tried this in 3rd gear at Taupo... revcounter showed
something just under 8000 rpm! Optimistic obviously.
The car had the stock ECU then.

The rev counter takes the pulsed digital signal from
the ignitors and turns then into an analogue needle
movement useing a capacitor to smooth out the needle
movement. this capacitor however slows the response of
the needle, so mazda made the needle read optimistic
and indicate a higher rev than the ecu is seeing!
I too hit the rev limiter at taupo in second, at an
indicated 7700 or so rpm. The rev counter can be made
more accurate by replacing the smoothing capacitor for
a smaller one making it quicker to respond, then
recalibrating the needle by holding the revs at 6000
or so and repositioning the needle on its shaft. your
rev counter will have a more pronounced wobble at idle
though. The guys in the statews do this mod when
recalibrating the temp gauge sweep also.

Thank you everybody for your replies.
The reason I came across this "problem" was I took the slack out of the
throttle cable. Then slowly depressed the pedal to see if it went all
the way taking the lever at the throttlebody with it. That's when I
noticed the revcounter showed way more than 7200 without cutting the
fuel supply... My limiter has cut in in the past - I just never
happened to look at the revcounter when it did, just assumed it would be
at 7200 as the book says...
so, I suppose everything is well. Thanks again everyone,
Martin
