Jeff, you Aucklanders are a funny bunch!! I was a bit confused by your description of the the shifting being "visceral" so I looked the word up on an on-line dictionary. It told me that it means "based on deep feeling and emotional reactions rather than on reason or thought".
I'm getting worried about you Jeff. I think you're getting far too emotionally attached to your car!!

ah bugger, that's what happens from reading too many babelfish'd Japanese pages! :p
What I meant is that as you shift you can feel the gears meshing (or not, as the case may be) in a very direct and connected way ! A bit like resting your hand on the meat grinder... OK, slight exaggeration, but still...

Shifting from fourth to fifith as I cruised down the Auckland freeway, my hood
seemed a bit loose, so I pulled into the gas station. My right front fender
scraped the kerb as I drove over the sidewalk and up to the pump. Filled my
gas tank with unleaded and put a six pack of Bud in my trunk from the vending
machine. Back on the road and hit sixty with the top down as the Miata roared
into the night.
No matter how you say it, Yankee or otherwise, she's a beautiful ride...
