Rear brake calliper problem

Post by Mikkels » Sun Jun 08, 2003 5:42 pm

Hi

Just failed a warrant with a problem of fluid leakage from left rear
calliper on my 1990 red perfect MX5. The fluid was present around the
adjuster bolt etc not near the disc.

Today I removed the calliper and had a real problem getting the piston
out as the adjuster wind out method just did not work well. I had to
pull the piston with pliers then the adjuster would go loose enabling me
to get about a turn out of it. Many repeats of the above saw the piston
out. The piston looked fine but the adjuster side was full of fluid and
when I withdrew the hex adjuster it was very "chewed" at the spline end.

Any ideas on what to do here? Second hand calliper is looking
appealing. Repco quote $150 for a kit to rebuild the calliper. From my
reading it looks like the O ring seal on the adjuster has failed and
fluid has got through to the other side. Also looks like the adjuster
has had a bit of work in the past

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Rear brake calliper problem

I had exactly the same problem with Morven's MX5. I bought a rebuild kit from Mazda and we haven't had a problem since.

Same problem here, I got a 2nd hand caliper from Ross. Problem solved, minimal
expense.

Sounds like a standard problem with 5s of that age. I had one
replaced a few months ago.
