Fuel 91 vs 98 (wasRe: New to the list :-))

Post by Ian Chapman » Fri Nov 05, 2004 2:41 pm

I recall someone here a while ago saying they (or a friend) worked for a
fuel company and would not put 91 into something they loved. The
implication being that the quality of 98 was quite a bit better than 91
- I recall that the limits for some of the 'extra ingredients' was quite
a bit higher in 91 than 98. Anyone verify this as fact or an urban
legend I created?

I also understand BP Ultimate (and maybe Synergy 8000) is not from the
same tanks as other brands 'premium' petrol and is a bit better.

I've always put 98 in our MX because the slight extra cost is offset by
the greater power I imagine I'm getting!

I think that should be 91 vs 96 correct? BP Ultimate is touted as
being around 98 octane, but they don't always state this - just that it
is a bit better than the standard 96.

The official honestly-unbiased-from-the-manufacturer-statement* says:

"BP Ultimate has also been formulated not only to keep a new engine
virtually at the level of cleanliness it was when new, but also has the
ability to reduce engine-clogging deposits caused by using regular
unleaded,"

"Through regular usage of BP Ultimate, motorists can experience:
- Up to a 5.8% increase in fuel economy (equating to an additional 43kms
per tank)
- Up to an 8.3% increase in power
- Up to a 6.9% increase in acceleration.

"For motorists, usage of BP Ultimate is like driving a car with a bigger
engine - it can be as if you upgraded from a 2.6 litre to a 3.0 litre
engine."**

"In addition, vehicles benefit by:
- Preventing 97% of valve intake deposits from forming and removes old
deposits;
- Removing 75% of existing deposits on critical engine parts."

"Whilst tests have demonstrated that cars using BP Ultimate could travel
up to an extra 43kms (depending on normal fuel consumption and tank
size) BP Australia has received testimonials from customers stating fuel
economy benefits experienced are significantly higher, some claiming
that they can travel up to 100kms further per tank with BP Ultimate. "

Cheers & YMMV

* BP/Castrol sub lease some space from us in our building...
** That means you can have a 1.84L MX5 if you have a 89-93... ;)

I'll try to remember and let everyone know how many kms I get on the latest tank.
