Hi:
Am not a list member - Could I please have a personal reply?
I opened the boot of my 1991 Mazda Eunos Roadster recently to find it
pooled with water. Initially could not find where the leak was coming
from - tested the rubber boot seal, the petrol flap, the wheel arches,
the boot hinges, etc.
Finally I discovered that the leak appears to be coming from the base of
the soft top (where the soft top meets the metal body - ie, NOT THE REAR
WINDOW) with the water trickling down into the body of the car and then
into the boot.
Any suggestions as to how this can be fixed other than having the whole
soft top removed?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Check the drains from the rain rails etc aren't clogged. Don't know if this
would cause water in the boot, but worth checking anyway.

Boot pooled with water
Hi Esther/Brian,
It sounds like your rain rail might be damaged. The rain rail is the
part that connects the softtop to the body of the car and is designed to
collect the water that comes down the roof. The water then runs along the
rail and into a 'funnel' inside the car (behind the seatbelt pillars).
This photo shows a close up of the rain rail.

I'm 99% sure that it is possible to remove the rain rail without removing
the whole soft-top. Have a look at this web site
http://www.miata.net/garage /top/index.html and follow steps 1 to 8.
After step 8 you should be able to assess the damage and possibly repair
it without fitting a new rain rail. If you are a DIY type of person, you
should find this pretty straight forward. If I was doing it, I'd say it
would take me under an hour remove, inspect and refit. Depending on the
damage you may be able to do a temporary fix with duct tape or similar.
Cheers

It could also be that your drains from the rain rail are blocked. ThereIt sounds like your rain rail might be damaged. The rain rail is the

may be some better pics & instructions for cleaning somewhere, but there
is a pic here (softtop drain pipe)

If the rear carpet (parcel shelf) is wet this may explain it.
