Windscreen strip

Does anyone know how to adjust the black plastic strip that runs across the
car between the bottom of the screen and the top of the bonnet - (the wipers
come out from this strip)?

It has dark grey 'covers' that seems to be the points where there are some
kind of fixings. My black strip is loose and makes a loud rattling noise.

I am not sure whether these grey 'covers' need to be prised off or should they
be pushed from underneath?

This was one of my may rattles that I have killed (but there's one more I just
can't find... grrrr...) anyway if something can't be fixed with a hammer (good
for use on Green MX5's) or a welder... then use silicon. I squeezed some black
silicon under mine and it stopped rattling. Not exactly styley (new word into
the spell check) but effective none the less and can't really be seen.

The problem rattles on a green MX5 for example is that most fittings are
embarressed and are therefore trying to work themselves loose so they may
escape...

Those dark grey covers are faded black. You can gently prise them off
with a screw driver/knife. If they are grey they will probably break
when you take them out. Under them are screws that hold the strip on -
these may have come loose. I've not taken the strip off but possibly
just tighten the screws and maybe add some foam backed adhesive tape
under the strip to stop any rattle.

Most Mazda parts depts have the small screw covers in stock for a few
$'s each - the bigger oval ones (I think two on the car) are not usually
in stock and a bit more expensive. Gary Morrison in Wellington got 10 I
think a few months ago as that was the minimum Mazda would bring in - he
sold me two and may have some left, about $4 each - Gary are you out
there?

Far be it from me to be pedantic, and it may be because my MX5 is a (metallic)
green one that I take issue, but I feel I should point out that the reason
'styley' is a new word on your spell checker is that it doesn't exist. I think
'stylish' is the word you and assorted American fad-influenced sub-teenagers
(such as my daughter) are looking for!

OK, so it's not THAT far from me to be pedantic - but I am an editor...

Anyone else had a problem with their electric window stopping part way up?
Mine starts again when I press the button again, but it's irritating and I
fear that one day it will give up the ghost. The windows are down usually when
it is garaged - could dust have got in, or does it need lubricating, or is the
motor about to go?

My drivers one goes all the way up but will not go down at all unless I hold
the switch. How do these things work on auto position anyway? I assume the
sense the motor current and the window stops when the curren rises above a
set value, as if the motor is stalled when the window reaches its stops.
Could be that the motor is working too hard and drawing too much current for
the switch to remain in the auto position. In that case, a good clean and
lubrication of the window channels and cable mechanism might be in order.
Hopefully those more knowledgeable than me has the answer.
My problem is that the drivers window rattles when right up but with the
roof down. Appears to be caused by the clamp at the bottom of the glass. I
haven't been able to get at it to tighten the bolts slightly. Anybody know
how?
Let's stamp out 'styley' now!!!

Grant in Blenheim wishing he was out in his BRG MX5 today. At least I got a
trip through to Nelson yesterday with the roof down. Yes, it's GREEN and I
love it!

The problem with young people of today is that they think they know it all, maybe it will be not too far away that they will be wanting us to replace the English language wth txt. They have it far too easy, in my day they would all be working 18 hours a day down the mine for sixpence a fortnight. None of the modern luxuries of electricity and jet-skis.

Anyway, I have had a similar driver's side window problem, however, mine runs out of steam halfway down. It goes all the way down if I assist by pressing down on the window.

Actually, having been brought up in a mining village in Scotland, the miners
were the aristocracy. Cheap housing, high wages, free coal allowance and the
biggest disposable incomes in the country. One ran a Rolls Royce - and not
an old one either... But they worked incredibly hard in foul conditions, and
when Thatcher destroyed the coal industry she destroyed a lot of tight-knit
communities. And, most importantly, they didn't use 'styley'.

Try dismantling the switch and cleaning the contacts.Dirty contacts are a
common problem.Ross.

Hi Simon

No sh*t, of course it's not in the speller it's a recent addition to the slang
vocab' of those of us fortunate enough to be able to tell the difference in
use between Stylish and Styley... albeit they do have the same meaning.

Yes Grant, I have the same problem with the left hand window, it rattles
when fully up, with the top down. The hood supports it when up and the
problem goes away.
I have not had a chance to get into it yet, but I find that if I crack the
window down an inch (25.4mm to you younger types, the .4 is important) the
window seems to be sufficiently supported at the bottom so that the rattle
stops. So that's what I do.

Now, if I could just find the rattle under the dash!

I had the same problem and eventually had to remove the regulator clean it
up, including the cables, and re-greasing with a light grease. You don't
want a grease that is too heavy as in the cold (plus years of road dust) it
thickens and will slow things down and also put extra stress and strain on
your motor.
