1.8 in 1990(2)

Well I have put the second engine in the car (last weekend)
All went perfectly however I now need to get the mixture
checked to be sure that I am safe.

New engine was rough on the outside - covered in mud and oil
as had sat on the shelf for ages at AnyMaz.

Inside the engine was pristine. Cams etc looked superb
though absolutely dry.

I lifted the bearing caps on both cams and lubricated with
wynns. The rest of the install went without a hitch. I'm
getting good at engine swaps. Total time was 2 days work
for one. I did have a couple of guys help me swing in the
new engine.

Now - what to do with the old engine?

It shouldn't be too far off.

It took me a month of sundays to shoehorn a BPT into an old BFMR all
those years ago.
I'm glad to hear that it's considerably easier with an MX, `cos i plan
to do just that sometime.

Strip it down, install forged pistons, a few bits from a familia GTR, a
GT-28 turbo,
and when you feel the need for speed...
Nah, just sell or keep it for parts. :)

Cheers, Rex

Yes I am pretty sure that I am OK since the mixture was reset but I'm not
keen on wrecking another engine. I hope to get it on a Dyno soon.

Of interest was that when I first put the first 1.8 in I had the Air Con
serviced about a month afterwards. After that service the engine was much
worse when cold - unreliable idle and misfires on cold start.

When taking the wiring off the old engine I found that one of the leads was
off the throttle body. New engine starts and idles well from cold. I guess
that was to do with that connection allowing for a different idle setting
when cold and when A/C is on. I had the mixture set later while the lead
must have been off. I'm just wondering/hoping that attaching the lead again
has not changed the mixture. Anyone know what that lead does (plugs in
below the throttle position sensor.

Old engine? I'm thinking of taking the head off and having a little play.
Maybe shave it a little to push the compression ratio up and refresh the
valve seats then swap with existing head. Anybody shaved a 1.8 head here?
What's to know?
