oil

Some probably dumb questions-
1. So what sort of oil should one put into the engine of a 1991 unos roadster?
2. What should tyre pressure be?
3. Can someone please tell me how to interpret what I see on the oil pressure
gauge, and what is normal when driving on open road? I know that it is oil
pressure, but what does that mean?

Cheers
Penny

Hi Penny,

The only thing dumb about questions is not asking them when you need to!

To answer yours in simple terms, it really depends what you are using your car
for, but I assume that you are not racing it and that it is in good condition
for age.

Oil, If your car is being used as basic transport then any good quality oil
rated 10W/50 is fine. I usually use Shell Helix, in the yellow container, if
that makes it easy.

Some people swear by synthetic oils, but for most people they are not
necessary. What is important is to keep it clean with good filters and to
change it regularly, every 5000 km is not too often, certainly no less often
than every 10,000km or 6 months.

It is important to keep it at the correct level, it is as bad to have too much
in the engine as it is to have too little. So check it regularly.

Tyre Pressures. I run mine at the book recommendation of 28 Pounds per square
inch (PSI), (don't ask me what that is in Kpa). That seems fine for basic
running around on standard tyres, if you have something different ask your
tyre guy for his recommendations.

Oil pressure, Basically, the oil gets "squeezed" between all of the moving
parts of the engine, so that those parts ride on oil and don't rub on each
other, The oil has to be under pressure to force it's way in and this pressure
is produced by an engine driven pump. Because the pump runs fast when the
engine is running fast and slow when the engine is slow, the pressure will
vary a bit with engine speed, but should sit, on average, about in the middle
of the dial at normal speeds. I think there are a couple of different oil
pressure set ups on MX 5s, mine is calibrated in "kgs/sq cm" and runs at
between 3 and 4 most of the time, but your car, being a 1600 and a little
older than mine, might have something different. If the needle is in the
middle of the dial you should be fine.

I hope that answers your questions, enjoy your car

Eric

Thank you Eric.

PS kPa is kilopascals, the SI unit for pressure.
conversion factor 1 kPa = 0.145 lbf/in2

cheers
