I decided to solve the oil burning problem of my first
conversion by getting another engine. I have sourced a
second incomplete engine - missing flywheel front pully and
other odds and ends but with everything I need.
Have begun the strip down to move stuff over from the ruined
engine.
After thinking long and hard about it it seems obvious that
the 1.8 on the 1.6 set up is going to be way rich as the AFM
will open further at lower RPM due to the greater
displacement of the 1.8. This sets the mixture too rich as
the 1.8 injectors flow more than the 1.6. The mistake I
made was accepting the advice of a Dyno guy who said that
the computer would adjust everythig from the oxygen sensor
output and not to worry. I think the mixture was just too
far out for the ECU to cope. I finally realised that I was
way rich as the fuel consumption was very high. The Dyno
guy at Torque Performance knew his stuff and sorted the AFM
and the fuel ecomomy improved by nearly 50% but too late for
the bores I'm afraid.
Once the second engine is in place I will get the mixture
checked immediately.
If you do this conversion yourself that is the important
thing to do.
What is good is that I have a second engine now to play
with. Spares won't be a problem and some nice modifications
to the second engine seem like a plan to me.
