Front/Rear suspension brace/tower brace...How do you install

Post by Perry perry » Tue Jun 08, 2004 5:55 pm

I have purchased the original front and rear (consisting of 2 long bars
welded to a short bar, to make a "c" shape") under body suspension braces
belonging to a 1996 MX5. I was going to install them on my 1991 (Japan
imported) MX5, but it exactly how do you install it?

I assume you have to drill some holes in the body??? The front came with 2
bolts but no nuts and the rear brace came with 6 bolts but no nuts.

With respect to the tower brace between where the seat belts are secured I
was wondering if there is a position under the plastic that the bolt bolts
to? I guess I have to cut away the plastic but I really don't want to do it
and make a mess to find out that I'm out of luck.

If there is anyone that can point me to tradesperon who has undertaken these
installations would be appreciated. (In case I out of my depth)

Cheers

Perry

Front/Rear suspension brace/tower brace...How do you install

If your talking about the bars that bolt to the
differential subframe then you may be out of luck
trying to fit it to the 91 car. The 1800 cars had
special brackets welded to the floor and subframe for
the brace to mount to and the 1600's dont have them.
Not sure as to the others, i beleive that the front
one should just bolt in to existing holes.

Front/Rear suspension brace/tower brace...How do you install

Perry; Glenn is right, the 1800cc NA cars had this rear lower brace fitted
to some of them. There is a captive nut at the rear of the chassis rails on
all cars but not all the subframes have the nessacary mounting plates. If
you are at the AGM you can see it on my 95 R spec and take some
measurements. The brace behind the seat has the captive nuts behind the seat
belt bolt on the tower. You will need to trim the plastic cover to allow the
brace to fit.I have these dimensions if needed. Ross.
