Exhaust wrap

I've heard that exhaust wrap can cause deterioration of the headers through
overheating. Whether this is true in NA cars I'm not sure.

Exhaust wrap

Mine were wrapped for 6mths (incl. 1 track day), plus
however long they'd been on there before that. Only
problem was the paint flaking off when I removed the
wrap!

Exhaust wrap

Post by poison » Mon May 17, 2004 10:02 pm

Hi All
I've also investigated this subject today and found two things, the first
being that, yes cast iron headers can crack as they get too hot and become
weak, but drawn steel pipe extractor types are no problem. The second thing, I
rang a few shops for advice and pricing of exhaust wrap but only Al's Mufflers
on the shore warned me of this danger (I looked him up on the net and he seems
to be well regarded). I'm still keen to know if it would keep the whole thing
cooler under the hood though... experience anyone???

Exhaust wrap

David,
Yes I've used exhaust wrap on my Hurricane headers.
It does keep the heat down. The bad side is that it decreases the life of
the headers. They are only about 18months- 2years old and I've already had
to repair them as they have gone thin in places , cracked and holed.
Next time I would have them HPC coated which does a similar job and they
look better as you can have them coloured.
Hope this is some help
