Muffler relocation & tyre lifting

Post by SLYDIT » Sat May 01, 2004 4:31 pm

has any one thought about using one of the wind up
chain wheel holders as used on the holden VN-VR utes??
they were easy to use and means you can just wind the
tyre up/down from the ground meaning no "heavy and
akward lifting under the car,and it self locks with
the ratchet mech. the unit bolted up the under side of
the ute tray so theres no reason why it couldnt be
bolted to the underside of the MX floor?

I looked at that also, all the Jap utes have them as well. The problem is
they are quite bulky and have a right angle drive for the handle coming out
just below the boot floor, which puts it about halfway up the bumper? Unless
you can come up with a way of changing the handle position it means cutting
a hole in the bumper. Vince.

The wheel is a very snug fit under the floor, so I doubt any of these
mechanisms would work even if they could be fitted. Plus they will add weight.
I can manage to remove and re-fit my spare under the floor and I have
arthritis that makes me somewhat less flexible than others! It's not easy
but it can be done. Removal is easier than fitting and if you have to remove
the wheel, then, assuming you have a flat tyre, you won't have to fit it
back immediately. You will be able to get help or get the tyre repairer to
fit it back when on a hoist perhaps. The hard part is working out where to
put the standard wheel to get it back to a workshop!

Indeed!
Infact I am very tempted to just toss out the spare...after all most tires
seem to go flat in the garage these days...rather than on the road...
Oh..am I tempting fate!

I believe the average in New Zealand is about 70,000km per flat tyre. My MX5
should be ok as I've used my quota on my 4WD. 5 punctures since November
last year. At least I bought Bridgestones and their guarantee has covered
the repair costs.

Hey, at last I'm way above average on something!

I have had two punctures on the MX5 in 10,000 km, both front tyres. They
were brand new Kumhos, nails both times, but I think that it is probably a
function of the Whangaparaoa housing boom

Tyre Pandos should not be a problem, we used to use them on the Ministry of
Transport Patrol Bikes and you simply washed out the tyre before fixing it,
but remember that they are strictly a "get you home" and you should fix the
tyre at the earliest possible time.

In some ways it is a better option than the space saver, if you have ever
tried to drive an MX5 with the spacesaver on the front you will understand
what I mean. I highly recommend moving a fully inflated rear tyre to the
front and putting the space saver on the back, even though this means
changing two wheels, it's far safer.

Regards

Eric

A space saver should only be used on the back at any time. This does mean
that all flats will be on front tyres though.
Where did you put the flat tyre to get it home?

If you have a passenger AND a boot full of luggage, the answer is on the
passenger's lap. So, always carry a sheet of plastic or an old blanket or
something of that nature when you have a full load! The better half will NOT
appreciate having a dirty wheel resting on her clothes.

Come to think of it, if that happens she'll be driving and YOU will have it
on YOUR lap :-)

Fortunately, both times we had nothing in the boot, this is really about the
only thing with the MX5 which was not well thought out by the designers.

I think that my tendency would be to pack anything in the boot around the
passenger and inside the, raised, hood and stick the flat tyre in the boot,
you should really tie it down though, as you can't close the boot lid, in
fact the flat tyre virtually has to stand up, to fit in the boot
