Just a heads up for anyone in Auckland who may need a new battery.
My one died on me so I rang JWA in Gt North Rd and was quoted $213
which is the same as has been quote on this list before.I went
in later in the day and the parts guy asked if I had been quoted a price.
I said yes but he didn't ask me what price.I flashed my 2004 Club Card
and suddenly the price is $190.25 incl GST.He couldn't zap my credit card
fast
enought an I was out of there like a thief.Almost saved my club membership in
one purchase.

Steve : did you manage to keep your old battery or trade it in? The reason I
ask is because I almost bought a new one when mine died, but hooking it up
to a trickle charger revived it

Actually, it should have possibly been cheaper than that if that quotedin one purchase.
price was retail - JAM promise us 15% off retail which is more like $30 off.
Refer the pullout page in Top Down mag.
But... it's not worth joining the club, it is a micky mouse show. They just
suck in the brass and after about a month won't even show the courtesy of

Sorry zorruno, not my experience with the club.
For starters, where do you think this forum comes

I think it's well worth the money to join the club. The money is well spent
as far as I am concerned if all it does is keep this forum and the web site
running, plus the Top Down magazine! How else would we easily find out about
the various events around the country and get the opportunity to
participate? Now, if only the club could arrange a special rate for members
to cross the Cook Strait to participate in some of those interesting Noth
Island events!

Isn't $213 for an Mx5 battery a little excessive?? I paid $140 recently for
a large one for my 5 litre Jag and about the same for my 4WD Pajero diesel.
Is there something special about MX5 batteries?

Yes there is. My understanding is that becuse they are mounted in the boot,
which is a sealed area, for safety reasons they need a breather pipe. Any
old battery will not do, and I suspect that if you had a problem with a
non-vented battery installed then your insurance company would wriggle like
mad.

Not quite right, the reason for gel cell batteries is that the boot is not
sealed from the passenger compartment. The last thing you need is acid from
a ruptured bateryy down your neck.

Some of you may notice that this is my first post since a certain email was
received on this list on the 11th Feb.
I've spent the last 4+ years of my life helping try to make the club what it
is today - and it really gets me angry when people for some reason think
this club is some profit making business. I'm was not the only one upset by
that email. All the people who run this club are volunteers & do their very
best to keep everyone, anywhere in New Zealand that has an interest in MX5s,
happy.
Yes, I know where this discussion list comes from. I created it in 1999 and
have maintained it since. And yes, the space to host it comes out of MX5
Club of NZ fees & sponsorship.
And just for information, re that previous email - a membership pack was
sent by the membership person less than one week after receiving the
application form. And regarding confusion over Christchurch membership, it
has happened once before that we know of, and we gladly gave that person a
refund of their $40.
Phew. I feel better now - back to discussing MX5s.

Oops, didn't realise the Roadster battery was in the boot - haven't really
had any reason to look for it yet. However, the battery in my Jag is also in
the boot and sealed with a breather pipe through the floor. I read somewhere
that this was to prevent charging fumes from rusting out the rear end of the
car over time. In any case the larger sealed battery only cost me $140 from
an Auto Electrician, and the Pajero battery is a big diesel cranker (though
not sealed), and it was the same price. So $213 for a smaller battery for
the MX5 seems expensive??

I bought a dry cell battery for this and for the fact that a large
stereo can drain a normal battery quite fast and the dry cell one I got
doesn't have a memory so you can run it flat and top it back up again
without reducing it's life span quite as drastically as a normal
battery.

Don't worry zorruno. The majority of us are well aware of all the great
work you (as well as many others) do and are very appreciative. This is
a great list and the clubs website is the best club site I've seen. I
hope you can continue to find the spare time to keep these going as the
club would be all the poorer without your input.
Thanks

Hi Lyndon,
The MX5 Battery is a special Acid Gel type, for a number of good reasons.
Rather than canvas them "ad nauseum", you can read the previous discussion
in the back files on the club site. The previous correspondence was dated
10th to 12th November last year.
Hope this helps

They're actually called "Glass Mat Aborbtion" .There is a good article on
www.miata.net in the garage section
about how they were developed an why they are used in the MX5.The battery in
my car, which I believe was the
original was 11 years old.I dont think any standard lead acid battery would
last that long so the price is relative.
The price I was quoted over the phone ($213) was with the club discount( he
called it the trade price) so when it
was cheaper I was happy. I did look at trying to recharge the old one but
the cheapest trickle charger I could find
at both Super Cheap & Repco was about $98.There are plenty of cheaper ones
around but they usually charge at
4 or 5 amps and these batteries dont respond to that sort of treatment.
With no guarantee that would work on an old battery I decided to
get a new one.
