high-beam switch

Post by simple » Tue May 09, 2006 9:40 am

I posted a while ago about my faulty highbeam switch - when the switch
gets warm (ie. in Summer, or when the heater is going), the headlamps
have a tendency to spontaneously switch into highbeam. I did some
testing at the time and determined that it was definitely thermal and
definitely in the switch - warming up just the switch block with a
hair-dryer brought on the fault.

I visited the parts department at North Harbour Mazda and got some
quotes. The highbeam switch is replaceable by itself (ie. you don't
need to replace the whole indicators/headlight/washers combination
switch assembly, which would be about $300 I think). For my 1989 NA,
they quoted me:

N002 66122 UNIT LIGHT COMB SWI $75.54 incl GST

This is almost reasonable! I think this price was without the MX5club
discount (which I had forgotten to ask about before he printed the
quote), so the price is probably about 10% lower. I haven't done the
fix yet - it seems to take something like 20km of heater-on driving to
warm up the switch at the moment, and I rarely do that at night, so it's
not currently a problem. I expect to have to look into it seriously
when the weather starts to warm up again.

Also, while I was at Mazda, I thought I would check on the price of the
centre console surround (the plastic that surrounds the radio/heater
controls - mine is brittle and cracked). I'd been told they were on
special (for about $70, IIRC). The price is thankfully lower than
the previous figure of $150 I heard a few years ago:

NA01 55210 B00 PANEL, CENTRE $90.12 incl GST

(Once again, I think this price is without the 10% MX5club discount)

The man shrugged and looked confused when I asked if they were having a
special deal at the time, but the figures do add up to something
approximating what I had heard, if the rumour was an ex-GST price. He
did say that this price was the current normal price and that he
expected it to be fairly stable indefinitely.
