Petrol grade

Post by mikey » Mon May 01, 2006 8:56 pm

I've seen a few emails lately regarding petrol grades. Currently I have my NA
running at 14 degrees and on 91. Been running pretty good, though have been
pondering switching over to 98 from BP as I understand this fuel is pretty
good...

Opinions?

If I do run my NA on 98 what degree BTDC should I adjust to?

Cheers!

Come on bill - there is no need for this.

Please, please drop the insults - let's all just be civil to each other.

It will make the list a far more productive and a better place place for all.

And others let's stop provking.

Let's put a big line under this whole issue and go back to the mx5 subject matter.

Please !!!

Re: Petrol gradefrom memory, previous emails on this subject seemed to agree that better mileage is achieved from 98 octane which equals any savings from cheaper 91...

Interesting you should say that.

Ive been worried Ive been topping up at the gas station a lot more than
normal, but Im certain my driving style or amount has not changed. Ive
had my silencer off but I wouldnt have thought it would be affecting
anything.

Maybe I should look at switching to '98 again then :-)

I run my NA 1.6 and NB 1.8 on 98 here. The difference in economy more than
makes up for the difference in price. As the price goes up, the (%)
difference comes down as the number of cents difference between 91 and 95 or
98 has not changed. You will notice an improvement in performance and the
engines seem to run smoother as well. Our Honda Odyssey (2.3 Vtec) also
showed a very worthwhile improvement in economy when changed from 91 to 98
petrol. The Honda is more economical on 98 than 95 as well making the 98
worth the extra cost.

When I did my "drive-about" NZ 15 months ago I decided I would use 98
instead of 91. I experienced the same improved performance described by
Grant.

I also changed to 98 from 96 and there was a great improvement.

As my MX5 was a Jap import and the 1.6 litre engines produced 97Kw opposed
to 85Kw and that they use 100 octane over there it might explain the
improvement.

I was wondering if you advance the timing from 10 degrees to 14 degrees
would it really work as this is base of USA feedback where they use 87
Octane

I understand the 87 rating in the USA is different to our, and Europe's,
system. So 87 in the USA is roughly equivalent to what would be 93 here.

I agree. I owned an NB for a couple of years with a 6 spd. the revs were running the same as my 5spd model when on the open road. I found most of the difference in the lower gears where they are designed to keep your revs in the 'sweet spot' between 4 and 6000rpm. First to second changes arrived very rapidly indeed. It was a lot of fun, but no different to the 5spd at 100kmh.

IIRC it'll fit tho the NB has a different speedo gear drive. More
importantly the 6th gear is nearly exactly the same as the 5spd-5th
gear - so not much benefit for highway cruising!

I've run into the same solution before with Mazda engines. First with 92 MS6
2 litre V6 and then with a 95 MX6 2 litre V6. Both times I noticed a slight
ping on first throttle stab and then no more while on 91. I changed to 96
and no ping, and much better fuel economy. It was more K's per dollar on 96
and still more on 98. I'm still on 91 in my 98NB6C but seriously thinking
about going up to 98.
I'm fairly sure that the JDM engines are tuned for about 98, but the engine
management retards the timing untill the engine dosn't ping, so they can run
fairly well on lower grade fuels.
As I understand the ECU, the timing can be retarded but not advanced, it is
controlled partly by the knock sensor as well as throttle position, air
flow, vaccum sensors, etc, etc, etc. Timing advance is largely controlled by
engine revs.
