opinions....

Post by Graeme Naisbitt » Fri Apr 28, 2006 11:59 pm

Bloody car started pumping out vapour from the back end. I thought at
first that it was steam, so I did the head gasket... on the test
drive, still smoking when it warmed up and I revised my best case
scenario down to - oil :(

its a 94 with less than a 100k on the clock. I took a big bite out of
the bullet and ripped the head again (took me less than an hour this
time) and fitted new stem seals... that took considerably longer,
though I reckon after about 6 you get the knack...

I've been waiting for a new head gasket to arrive at repco, last time I
got it from John Andrew at a cost of over 300 dollars, thank you very
much, I was in a hurry! never again, I'd rather wait a week and pay a
third of that!

I pick up the head gasket and fit tomorrow. What do you think, am I
hoping in vain? I've done compression tests, and all cylinders in dry
cold/dry wet are round about 180 :) It can't be a ring can it???

cheers

Oh well, the only opinions returned where concerning the usual
in-fighting, which is one of the reasons I stopped subscribing to the
list a long time ago. Time to remove myself again I think, I get enough
junk mail to start receiving more. Thanks but no thanks.

If anyone at all was interested, it did turn out to be the valve stem
seals, and it is quite tricky to refit the retainers but it gets easier
after the first couple...

Hey, don't go away! Just put any originators of messages you don't want to
see in your blocked list or maybe a special junk file.
Thanks for letting us know what the outcome of your repairs was. Good to see
you're up and running successfully again.

Grant.
