mg bgt exhaust note

Post by Marcus Tjaberings » Tue Apr 18, 2006 12:34 pm

I own a 1990 MX5, however have always loved the sound of a MGBGT, with the
burble etc. Anyone know of a exhaust setup or supplier that can get that
same sound from a MX5?

Wouldn't you need carbs and side-valves to get that effect ? (used
to have a Mini GT!)

Come to think of it my old Golf sounded similar - carbs and OHV
engine. Must be the carbs then ..?

Mazda spent a lot of time and money getting the sound of an MX5 "just
so". Why would anyone want it to sound like a Morris Minor's younger
cousin?

I agree, that lovely British exhaust burble was more a function of the
carbs than the exhaust.

Now, if an MX5 could produce the lovely exhaust sound of my old DB4GT
(three twin-choke Weber Carbs),under high speed engine braking, I would
immediately move into Marcus' camp, but with petrol going up another 6
cents, I can't afford to drive the MX5, let alone the Aston, if I still
had it. (17 mpg round town on the Aston was a really good result, at
high speed it could come down under 10)

We are in the fortunate situation of the MX5 being our more economical car -
provides a very good excuse to take it out all the time! It is frequently
being used to transport doggies around town. Although this morning it was a
little crowded when I spotted two dogs I knew exercising themselves on their
own, and delivered them home ... One person, one German Shepherd cross and
an Alaskan Malamute in the MX5 ... at least it was top-down weather so the
car didn't get pongy!

probably the closest you can get (without actually putting carbs on)
is to do the individual runner throttle bodies (IRTB) - this is wildly
expensive tho (>$2k USD), but makes the '5 sound like a sports bike.
:D

Or you could put carbs on! Those crazy Japanese have done it, seems to
be fairly popular ... (whodathought)

The MGB had overhead valves - all eight of them!
If you achieve the sound do you also get the oil leaks?
And the four-speed gearbox?
And the "Prince of Darkness" electrics?
And the Mechano set convertible top?
Suggest you stick with the MX-5 and record an MGB so you can play the
sound loudly on your stereo. Or learn to hum it!

I have cold air induction which consists of a pod filter with a cover around
it running to a pipe I think about 3 to 4 inches in diameter running through
the top part of the fire wall where the windscreen reservoir should be (you
could run into problems at WOF time, check previous threads re this)and this
plus an after market straight through muffler at the end and a hot dog type
muffler half way along, I have been told sounds a lot like an old mg,a lot I
think has to do with the intake sound which is a lot more detectable when
you really open it up...and I am sure the performance is better... well
it sounds faster any way.
Good luck
