aircon/powersteer drive belt

Post by mikey » Wed Apr 12, 2006 3:56 pm

Just curious to know whether anyone has simply removed this belt and gone without power steering and aircon simply to liberate a few extra kw?

Will this damage the aircon/power steering in any way if the belt is removed?

(I remember this topic a long time ago, however a google search of the archives fails to find anything)

aircon/powersteer drive belt

Gidday Mike

You can't disconnect the drive belt to the power steering pump or the
steering will become very heavy - like it is when you turn off you engine
and try to turn the steering wheel. It not like unassisted steering in
steering effort.

But no probs dissconcting the aircon - just get another right sized drive
belt to drive the power steering pump only.

While not saving much power (when the aircon's off the compressor is not
being driven anyway) you get a quicker respose down low, because the engine
is not driving the aircon pulley & electro-clutch any longer, reducing
intertial rotating mass.

Cheers
Mark

Like all of you I also enjoy my little gem (so much so I have 2) My only concern is the lack of airbags in the series1. Is it possible to install them after the fact? Thanks, Richard

hmmmmmm, not sure about the trouble-free motoring. I've had mine 5 months and although I absolutely adore Betsy, she's not without her problems not least of which is a roof that needs replacing (and the present one is only about 18months old!!)Ho hum, at least the husband is having a ball replacing bulbs in the dashboard, cleaning the contacts for the electric windows, fixing the headrest speakers...

BTW, Nokia hands-free speakers for cars are the right size for the headrest speakers.

aircon/powersteer drive belt

Mike...Mark is right re the power steer, but I think all the air con experts
will suggest that air con units needs to be run every week for a few mins,
just to lubricate seals etc (if that is important to you)
I assume you have done the 14 degree timing advance - perhaps the most cost
effective first step
Ianto finding a few extra hoses?

Hi Ian

You're right about the air con seals - if you want to retain max reliability
of the compressor if wanting to use again. It's just that quite a few
performance orientated chappies actually remove the unit altogether to save
a bit of weight as well.

I'd rather leave the aircon alone - as it doesn't really affect the
performance much when in the "off" position anyway. I find variations in
ambient air pressure and temperature alone, affect the power output of an
engine far more. Good call re the timing advance Ian.

The other thing I do is run 98 octane fuel (it's imported fully refined from
Perth's state of the art refinery so consistent quality is assured, unlike
'91 - I wonder sometimes if they add water to it, the quality is that
dodgy), Mobil 1 5W/50 Engine oil (very slippery stuff indeed), Synthetic
Gear Oil (to reduce friction in the drive train), platinum plugs, 10mm leads
and squirt a whole bottle of octane booster into the fuel tank every 1,000
km. Worth an extra 5 to 10 hp over a stocker running 91 - far more mpg too.

Happy & Safe Motoring to all over Easter!

Cheers

Hi Mark...

I am on a similar programme it would seem! BP 98 oct exclusively, semi
synthetic oil every 5000k, fully synthetic in the g/box, 8.5mm Ultra leads
from Racing Beat arrive next week, injector cleaner every 5000k, JR cold air
intake with foam filter, 2 and 1/4 exhaust (no cat), (no air con fitted)
plus 1840cc = fun!
