OK to leave hood down?

Post by DaveR » Tue Mar 21, 2006 12:56 pm

Now that I've actually got my MX-5 :-) , I've so far been able to drive
it with the hood (top) down. But I'm just wondering if it's OK to leave
the hood down all the time, or should I put it up while it's "resting"
in the garage to take the creases out of the fabric. Does leaving the
hood folded most of the time do any long-term damage to the vinyl?

Regards

Dave

OK to leave hood down?

Yes Dave, it is recommended that the hood remain up when the car is stored
(this is the recommendation from Robbins (the US hood manufacturers who
should know what they are talking about) - I had one of their's fitted in
December.

OK to leave hood down?

Post by poison » Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:18 pm

Hi Dave

I leave mine down all the time as it's parked inside and I
have a rear roof cover that I can't be bothered taking it
off to put the roof up every time I put the car away. But if
I try to put the roof up when it's cold wow, it's hard, it
is as if it shrinks a little.

The important thing!!! Is if you have a plastic rear
window, you must unzip it before you put the roof down. If
not it will get creased and then crack.

I do the same, however repeating my earlier request, does anyone know where
you could get the beading replaced that fits around the outside of the roof
cover. Mine has broken in about 4 places and it makes it quite difficult to
fit.

I also try and put the softtop up when parked - I left it down for
about 6 months (due to hardtop) and found that it had a case of ...
uhhh, shrinkage ... also the new-ish plastic rear window went cloudy
:P

OK to leave hood down?

Common sense tells me it is best to leave hood up if car is stored for any
length of time.. My MX5 is one of a family of 6 cars so is not used daily and
can sometimes go long periods without a run.. :-(
Leaving the hood up will stop creases and cracks I hope!

One point. The under side of the hood is not UV treated the more sun exposure yhe more it will deteriorate it. This shows as a brownish discoloration on the exposed area. Even though it's a hassle to deal with, a rear hood cover will pay for itself in extending the life of your top. Richard@wrichardstiers@yahoo.com

OK to leave hood down?

Unfortunately I did not get a hood cover with the car..have looked about for
one, they are hard to come by at a reasonable price...
Anyone know of any at present?
I guess really I should just bite the bullet, after all - money spent will
prolong the life of the hood eh :-)

I see it is stated that it will fit from 1995 to 2005 WRONG. the series 1
and series II have different fitings. Buyer beware!!!

The hood on my MkII is always down, it takes a lot to persuade me to
put it up :-) I've not experienced any deterioration or damage over
6 years, though it is a little tight when I do put it up. Regular
polishing may help, Kiwi boot polish once every six months, perhaps
more down your way due to the Ozone hole. Mine lives in a garage and
the hood still looks like new. Boot cover is recommended, though it
extends the 10 sec hood up time significantly, much to the amusement
of other motorists when the inevitable heavy shower comes :-)

Recommend a battery charger for the 'resting' times, one that can be
left on all the time. e.g. Accumate or similar.

I saw this man years ago. Now I have seen him again. I recognise
him. I remember his name. But why does there have to be a cause of
this remembering in my nervous system? Why must something or other,
whatever it may be, be stored up there in any form? Why must a trace
have been left behind? Why should there not be a psychological
regularity to which no physiological regularity corresponds? If this
upsets our concept of causality, then it is high time it was upset.

Heres the specs from my haines manual...

"4 x crankshaft pulley bolts"= 109 to 151 inch Lbs

Crankshaft sprocket bolt- ('89/'90= 80 to 87Ftlbs)1991
onwards=116 to 122 Ft lbs

Head bolts-56 to 60 Ftlbs

Main bearing caps- 40 to 43Ftlbs
Conrod bolts- 37 to 40 Ftlbs

Oil jets- 105 to 150 INCH lbs

Note the difference between torque settings for the
"short nose" early crank sprocket and the later
version. As you have a 91 id double check what sort of
crank nose you have before you crank the crank!!!
