Top Down's The Point (Was 1 Hp MX5)

Post by MadMaz » Fri Mar 17, 2006 11:01 am

Morning Tim

Horses for courses yes, but practicality's not the issue.

At approx 35 mpg (8 litres/100k) town/country with top down, the MX5 being
in the true sportscar class, does very well. So on a fine sunny day, why
spoil the driving enjoyment going top-up for a bit more fuel economy?

Driving top-down in the 5 is the point - that's why Mazda built it - and why
most people buy it.

Must be honest Tim, it's not only the Jazz I was referring to - but all
ultra-economy cars - I don't like any of them.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark

Manage to get around 40 mpg / 13.5 kms/l / 7 l/100 kms out of my 2000 NB.
Always drive top down except in extreme wet weather. Wouldn't dream of
having the top up on the MX5 when it isn't actually pouring with rain. It
does seem that a lot of people don't agree with that though (obviously not
Club members), judging by the number I see with tops up in fine weather. My
daughter also has an MX5, 1990 model (no power anything). On those occasions
when she drives home from work and doesn't risk putting the top down due to
grey skies, and then it doesn't actually rain, she always hopes I don't see
her coming in the driveway so she doesn't have to apologise!

My daughter even takes her budgie in it's cage out visiting in the MX5 (you
read that right!). The budgie really enjoys the experience as long as the
roof is down. It's not at all happy when the roof is up!
The cage was chosen so it would fit on the seat without any projections
damaging the seat.
