European cars

This from a friend of ours..
I am sure all you MX5ers will appreciate it :-)
Cheers Joan H Paekak

Heard a funny story yesterday.
A friend bought a second hand VW Golf late last year.
Then, on boxing day, she was driving through the Waikato, and it broke down in
Tirau.
She found a local garage that was open, and asked the mechanic if he could
look at it.
He said, "Well, if you want to drive a European car, you should live in
Europe."
And refused to look at it.
So she had to have it towed to Hamilton, where she found a mechanic who would
look at it, and found the problem was something that sounds like a low tension
lead had come loose from the coil. He charged her ten dollars, and she was on
her way.

But I wonder how far the first mechanic's theory holds:
"You want to drive a Japanese car, you should live in Japan."
"You want to drive an Australian car, you should live in Australia."
"You want to drive an American car, you should live in America."

If you live in New Zealand, you have to drive a Fraser Seven or an Alcon
Cobra? Or ride a horse?

Only the body of the trekka was NZ made the rest was donated from a scoda
octavia, perhaps he suffers from a split personality from driving in two
countries.

That back to front gearbox was probably the cause of his problems.

Surely anything by McLaren would count.

How about a Heron M1 (made by Baker Bros in Rotorua in the 80s and still a
classy looking car)

And thanks for the story, I just bought a Golf today!

Now didn't the Heron look very much like a serris 2 Lotus Elite?

Well, for the next three years that's Volkswagen's problem, although I suppose
that I should now emigrate to "Der Fatherland". I would have preferred
Bavaria, but having crossed over to the opposition, I probably should not
break down in Munich either!

Sounds as if the Mechanic should have said..
"im sorry , im to stuuupid to even try to diagnose the
problem"
Lots of those older European car use very similar
engine management systems such as the Bosch L-and
K-Jettronic systems, sounds like Professional
developement isnt high on the list of things to do in
that part of the world.
