New Zealand Classic Car Magazine MX5 comparison across the g

Post by DBM58 » Wed Feb 01, 2006 9:15 am

Hello to you all

I have had a call from Tim Nevinson of the New Zealand Classic Car Magazine requesting assistance in putting together an article comparing MX5s from each of the three models, NA, NB and NC. Mazda New Zealand have made a (silver) NC available and he is asking for standard examples of the other two. Ideally, the cars would need to be as follows:

- not silver - to give a contrast in colours
- as close to standard specification as possible - particularly with regard to wheel rims (important for the photo' shoot)
- style bars are acceptable
- ideally the engine options would be a 1600cc NA and an 1800cc NB
- manual transmission
- Tim will obviously need to drive your car to be able to make the comparison. His background is as a Jaguar test driver and MX5 owner. An internet search will give plenty of inf on Tim if required - or you can email him.

The timing for the comparison would be a single four to five hour period somewhere in the days Tuesday 16 and Tuesday 21 February. The location is yet to be settled, but could be Pukekohe Racetrack, or a local scenic drive. The aim is to compare the three cars, not to see how fast each can travel around corners. It will also be important to gain opinions of the NC from current owners - in other words you will be able to drive the new one.

If you are interested in being part of this exercise, please can you email your details to me, including your prefered day.

Thank you for your help

How about a standard 98NB6C (the 1600 engine). Mine is Twilight Blue Mica.
Factory fitted air dam, side skirts and rear "bump" spoiler, stock wheels
with 185/60 14 tyres. I have a silver hard top also.
This is a valid comparison as there are a lot of 1600 NB's imported from
Japan
I could be available any of the days.

Hello again

Thank you for your replies. I would like to suggest the following as examples of standard cars. The number is greater than originally requested but allows for the comparison to carry on should some cars be unavailable at the last minute.

i) Martin Harms
1990 NZ new, red
1600cc
all original, suspension, wheels, radio, steering wheel ,air intake - I
have purposely looked for a NZ new all original when I bought it. Have
owned for 8 years. The car has NO aircon, power steering, electric
windows.
The only change are the 2 braces underneath, behind seats, and front
across engine bay.
Martin Harms [pacificm@ihug.co.nz]

ii) David Stephens
Completely unmodified red 1600cc '92 manual. Its in good condition although the bodywork has a few small marks from stone chips - not quite showroom condition if this is important.

iii) Kevin Scrimgeour
Standard 98NB6C (the 1600 engine). Mine is Twilight Blue Mica.
Factory fitted air dam, side skirts and rear "bump" spoiler, stock wheels
with 185/60 14 tyres. I have a silver hard top also.
Kevin Scrimgeour [k_scrimgeour@hotmail.com]

iv) Jan and Bill
1999 VS NB
6-speed
Green with tan interior
Ramoana@Ihug.Co.NZ

v) What about Monday 20 February - that would still leave Tuesday 21 if for example the weather was unsuitable.

Thank you for your help

Best regards
