where did you find it?
Are there any part numbers on it?
What are the wire colours going into it? Might help identify what it is.

Yeah I suppose it helps to say that it came off my 89 NA somewhere in the engine bay, but I can't remember where it goes.

If the wires are

White, Brown/yellow, blue, yellow/blue, Black/White, black, brown, red

then it is probably the igniter for the igniton and if you are retaining your standard coils then, yes, you will need it.

It's got no numbers or markings. Doesn't seem to fit the igniter plugs.

Wire colours are 4 yellow, 2 white, 3 red & 4 black. And I suspect it's an after-market device as it doesn't look original Mazda wiring and plugs and also the fuse is a glass tubular one inside a plastic holder.

Time will tell if I need it.

With those connectors it does not look factory to me,I've pulled enough cars apart to have some idea, but can always proved wrong.

I have a suspicion that is a switching unit for aftermarket driving lights.
