Door Speakers in the NB - 6x9'sAnyone upgraded? what to buy?

Post by poison » Sun Sep 03, 2006 7:39 pm

While getting my alarm installed I found the door speakers were pretty lightweight, although I was happy to find they seem to be 6x9’s which is great. As I am about to buy a new stereo I thought it’s time to upgrade.

But after looking around on the net I have only found one pair of 6x9 components (separate tweeter and crossover) available, these are the Infinity 6810CS for $250 at Parallel Imported Ltd. A little more than I had hoped to spend so I’m keen for idea’s.

Another option is maybe to get some coaxials and pull out the centre tweeter and mount it up on the door, but this is maybe a bit rough.

My worry is that this add says “Includes Spacers for 6" x 8" (Ford / Mazda) Applications” anyone know about this? Are normal 6x9’s too big? And is there any issue with depth, ie; will they hit the window mechanism?

Cheers

I removed the horrible Bose ones from my NB and installed some 8" subwoofers
from Supercheapauto. They bolt in easily. I couldn't see how to fit 6x9s
without removing the original trim which I didn't want to do. Left the
tweeters in place as they are normal impedance. Work well. I believe there
are some 8" three way ones available from Pioneer, I think. I would have
preferred those but couldn't find any at the time. Replaced the head unit
and just disconnected the Bose amp but left it in the car. Couldn't be
bothered removing it.
I would like to replace the tweeters as well as they sound a bit peaky.
Added some attenuators to them to balance the level with the woofers. That
improved things but could be better.

They are actually 5x7" and are the standard now for mazda and ford...Pioneer and kenwood both make direct bolt in replacements which are very good quality for the price.think they are a bit more than your standard 6x9's due to the low numbers they sell but are around $200-250 a pair

5x7? The Bose ones (in my NB) are round and definitely 8". Maybe the non
Bose ones are different?

My 98 NB speakers are also 8", The Bose speakers were fine, I left them and the amps there and transformer coupled in an Alpine HU to the Bose amp balanced inputs. Sounds fine!!

I think that the main grizle with the Bose speakers are that as the paper cones deteroriate in the humid atmosphere inside the doors, the quality falls off very quickly. That is why the replacements sound so much better.
The same applies to any standard paper cone speaker in any car. Replacement speakers have much better quality cones that don't deteroriate to the same extent.

The Bose speakers are indeed 8" and it is nearly impossible to find a normal replacement. By normal I mean a 4ohm speaker for a normal stereo head unit. The Bose system uses 2 ohm speakers. I have upgraded my speakers but now the door buzzes with the bass. I have looked around the internet for idea's and it seems to be a common problem for those who chose any reasonable upgrade. Many models of the NB did not have a gay Bose system but as Slydit mentioned have 5 x 7's mounted in a plastic frame. Can't say I have actually heard the Bose system, but if it's anything like the accoustimass systems that Bose flog then they may look good and impress the Jones's on Branding but only (almost) sound good in only one spot in the living room. I fitted 6 1/2's but in hindsight wish I'd spent the extra on 5 x7's just to have saved a lot of time on fitting.

Does the plastic frame match the 5x7s to an 8" hole or is the door hole 5x7
as well? Just curious.
The Bose speakers fitted to the NB are actually 0.5 ohm impedance!
