Here are a bunch of manuals. There are some wiring diagrams in there: http://www.mellens.net/mazda/

Looking at the 1991 wiring diagram, it looks like all of the dashboard illumination is done via the "TAIL" fuse.

It looks like there is a panel lights control switch somewhere could be the source of your issues?

I think this problem came up a few months back. The auto sparky guy suggested checking the earths on .... I think up around the firewall area or perhaps behind dash. Can not remember for sure. Try trolling back through past posts. Bound to pick up some other great tips in the process at the least

I could be wrong, but if memory serves me right, there is an earth on the engine, another earth behind the dash and one other hidden somewhere else (I can't remember the exact location of the last one)

I would start by checking the dashboard earth.

good luck :)

now that you have told us that you had the dash apart, go back to where you were working on it and check your connections and have a look for loose pins in any plugs around the area that may have been bumped

I had this issue a few months back. I ended up changing a bunch of fuses (I think the manuals posted here should get you a list of what fuses do what etc).

Also worth checking the loom under your fuse box in the engine bay. The vibrations that the fuse box went under during driving eventually rubbed the insulation off a wire that ended up shorting on to the chassis causing all the issues for me.

I had a similar problem recently. I had inadvertently unplugged the socket from the centre dash switch (where the dimmer switch would go) on the lower rhs of the steering column.

Turns out the socket needs to be pro properly plugged in as doing so completes a circuit that operates the dash lights.
