Rollbars - If it fits a soft top, will it fit a hardtop?

Post by dylann » Tue Jul 17, 2012 12:49 am

This may be a stupid question, however google has failed me tonight.
At the moment im looking at a cusco rollbar from japan, the cusco catalogue says that it is for a soft top model however the hardtop model has a different code.

So basically, my question, is the hardtop larger interior space wise than the softtop?

Not sure if this will help, but ..
Catalogue - cusco.co.jp/en/pdf/Roll%20cage_mazda.pdf
Soft top code is 404 270 E20
Hardtop code is 404 270 EHT

Hardtop rollbars need to be slightly shorter so its no surprise they have a different code

The bar I've got is a carbing one, it clears both and is veeery snug with the hard top on. I'm 99% sure if you get the one to clear the hard top, it'll clear the soft top as well.
Cool sunroof bro...

Its like a full bolt in cage, headrests to windscreen so thats why i was interested, If anyone is interested in buying it, its $800 to wellsford but ETA is unknown, was getting it through ewan from hayatonka

You won't get a WOF with a full cage.

And as far as I'm aware you don't get a full cage certified in NZ without Motorsport authority.

You also won't get motorsport authority for a bolt in cage from what i've read.... MANZ don't like cheapie bolt in cages.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're probably better off spending the coin and getting a full weld in cage (can be done for around $1300ish at most places)

Just FYI.

I discussed at length with the tech officer at Motorsport NZ office the fitting of a very nice Mazdaspeed roll cage for my car (for competition purposes) and he explained that only roll protection built and certified in NZ would ever meet our scruitineering standards. Obviously there are exceptions (World Rally NZ cars coming in) but my understanding is that even if you were to import say a race car from offshore, without some sort of FIA stickered cage, you would need to cut the cage out and start again...
I stand to be corrected, of course...but a phone call to Motorsport NZ is highly recommended if you think you are going to see tracktime.

Cheers

Thats what I have...custom built...welded in when I only had a soft top. When I later bought a hardtop for racing...and removed the soft top to save weight, the hardtop fitted without any mods required.

Thread revive :)
Ian- How much was your rollbar and who made it? Im considering either importing a Hard Dog Deuce bar ($445 USD + Shipping...so ~$800 NZD landed at a guess?) or seeing how much it would be to fabricate one here based on the same design (and possibly raising the hoops slightly if poss)

I had a bar from Dons Autoway services in Hamilton on my NA....and it did the job, but wasn't the prettiest thing in the world, it also interfered with raising the soft top when you reached back due to the diagonal bar.

The Boss Frog hoop sits the hoops in front of the seatbelt towers which interferes with the seat belt retraction....so I think that would caused a failed WOF here.
